It looked like Big Bess was in some of those photos. How did he do?

I ate 8 and 1 bite (full dog and bun) of those nasty things and 3rd place ate 8 (full dog and bun) and 1 bun… so technically I ate more full dogs and buns than 3rd place. If I would have known a bun counted as .5 I would have ate the 2 buns on my plate instead of taking that last bite of the gross rubber dog!

Furious Pete, I wasn’t a contestant, but I had two of those tofurkey dogs. They weren’t too bad. Those dogs have zero cholesterol, zero saturated fat, and a whole let less garbage then regular hot dogs. There are many brands of meat free hot dogs, you can even find them in the produce and refrigerated sections of the larger supermarkets in metropolitan areas.

Fair enough, not everybody cares that much about their health and everyone has different tastes.

Big Bess, Ian, thanks for coming out. I had a lot of fun at the contest due to the good natured crowd and good natured contestants, of which you guys were two

Great job Ian and James. Man, those dogs had to be tough to eat. I guess they sort of balance out the burger from Bowie. 🙂 Too bad about the way the buns/dogs were counted. You’ll get ’em next time Big Bess.

Was there dunking allowed in this contest?

That’s weird they counted the buns as 1/2 dog. I guess someone could have sat there and eaten only buns if they wanted to.

Ian was excited about being in a hotdog eating contest he would be allowed to dunk in.

I asked, since they are veggie dogs does it count??

That’s not a whole lot of hot dogs. What happened?

Where/how does OJ find this shit?!? Seriously, nice work. I was rather surprised all this was out there cause if not for EatFeats, I would not have known about the contest before deadline nor seen any of the pics from it.

As always, thanks for the good word gents. Much appreciated.

I can honestly say I had a blast at this contest and was glad Bess came out to give me some competition. Great guy, you know. The pictures alone show the crowd atmosphere and how much fun we all had even in the heat of the final contest. Sticky Fingers and COK went out of their way for this and the huge crowd and exposure was the grand result. Hopefully next year they’ll do it again.

The contest allowed dunking but not only could I not use my usual cups, I was prohibited from using my Kool-Aid. WTF? I like my cups (if you’ve met me you know why) and I like my punch. Without these, it’s like a mental barrier. I’m just less comfortable.

As for the numbers, I underestimated the texture of a veggie hotdog honestly. I had never had one and assumed since made of soy and other various ingredients, it would be rather soft and easy to fly through. This was far from the case as you may see in one of the pics were I’m sweating as if from the meat sweats. IT’S FROM CHEWING! HA! I couldn’t help it. Like the consistency was foreign to me. Weird…

Next time I’ll find my rhythm at the start instead of trying out all the stuff I’ve heard to do throughout the actual contest. We shall see.

You mean they had you trying to dunk in those dinky little cups I saw in the pictures? What can fit in there, 1/4 of a bun? That’s pretty lame. I’m sure you could have put up a much bigger number with proper full size cups.

I love “Sticky Fingers”. They are excellent hosts. And thanks must go out to Compassion Over Killing.

P.S. Faux hot dogs taste remarkably similar to real (whatever that means?) hot dogs. Try them out, and rest comfortably in the knowledge that nobody had to suffer and die to make them.

maybe not to make them but you sure suffer eating them.

Really sounds like it was a fun contest. And the pictures made it look like it would have be really cool to go to. I might have to head over there one day and try something. I could always stop by Five Guys on the way home…

I was a judge at the contest. I was happy to have regular eating competitors there. FWIW, this is the first time Compassion Over Killing organized an eating competition of any kind. None of them knew that there was a subculture around it with customs, techniques etc. Compassion Over Killing is an animal advocacy organization. They were only looking for a way to promote veganism that was positive and fun.

beforewisdom – It is nice to see them giving it a chance and I hope they do more stuff in the future!! It does sound like it was positive and fun, although not everyone is a fan of the “veggie hot dog”. But that can be said for a lot of foods out there, so hopefully they wont be turned off by it. There are all kinds of food that they could go with that might get a better reception, like organic produce. When the food tastes good, and is consistent, the eaters will let you know. I heard many of the eaters at the Bowie Baysox Burger Bonanza comment on how great the burgers were, and even asked to thank the Chef personally.

well, this explains the mad traffic over at the old flickr site, esp on the “Dag” picture. Thanks for the coverage. I haven’t eaten a hot dog, soy or otherwise in a way long time, and I have to agree that the texture does not make for easy eating. My friends and I tried one of the leftovers afterwards, and quickly decided that pizza was a better bet for dinner. Alas, we each only ate a piece or two, and nobody saw fit to take pictures.

    Good job there buddy.
I bet those veggie dogs tasted better than the “Italian Sausage” we ate in Boston.
I just cant get over the nastyness of that crap.
That sure was not the “Premio” brand that they sell here in Cleveland.
I have had a veggie dog before and they are not so bad.
I mean really, that is what catsup is for.

My sites are set on August 23rd.

4 pounds of pierogies in 3 minutes.

4 pounds of pierogies in 3 minutes.

4 pounds of pierogies in 3 minutes.

Can I do it 4 years in a row.

Woops, sorry, I forgot that this was about veggie dogs. LOL.

    Shit I’m hungry.

    Good Job Ian.

North Pole. An organic produce eating contest is an interesting idea and I will suggest it to Compassion Over Killing. There are more interesting vegan foods to eat. The organization that coorganized the event, Sticky Fingers Bakery makes fantastic cakes, cookies, brownies, etc without dairy products or eggs. They taste so good many of their customers are not even aware that those ingredients aren’t used.

I found it to be really interesting that regular eating contest competitors even heard of Compassion Over Killings contest. The magic of the internet, I guess. Given the people who showed up and some of the cool comments here I think the two communities interfacing was one of the cool things about the event.
