Joe: I don’t think this guy wants to compete with anyone and ruin the image he’s being trying create for himself. Joe, you would probably eat this kid’s lunch and that would be it for his 15 minutes. This guy seems to be following the “Furious” Pete model. At least Pete got to cash in for a couple of years before he went against a real eater like Kobi and showed everyone that he’s really not what he is cracked up to be — a champion eater a la Kobi, Joey and Sonya. He saw people like Kobi, Joey and Sonya making a name for themselves, a little cash, notoriety, and he wants a piece of it. Yet, like Pete he seems to have missed the part about Joey, Kobi , and Sonya that first you have to be an incredible eater. A few articles saying you are incredible eater isn’t the same thing.

I have to say that it seems like Scott Bickel is the biggest farce to come around in while. He won’t even compete or eat with a pro like Joe but then claims he is going to win Coney Island……dilusional. Newspaper articles claim he ate the entire 20 for 20 menu at Aplebees but we all know he didn’t. Eating 39 chicken fingers in 30 minutes…..pathetic. Claiming he is on a mission from god to eat…..crazy. He gets all his buddies to vote for him as eatfeats.com rookie of the year and then boasts about it in interviews…..wow.

The one thing I will give him is that he is good at self promotion. That being said, I am looking forward to the day that he has the nuts to compete against a pro or pros and get’s his ass handed to him. Hopefully then we will never have to hear from him again. Come on Scott, step up to the plate and eat alongside Jammin Joe. Put up or shut up!

some people don’t get it that there might be a brotherhood in competitive esting. and I’m sure that there are many eaters who just don’t give a shit about anybody but themselves . I never claimed to be the best eater on the planet (well only in corn) but I can hold my own with anybody outside the top ten and thats fine for me. this was a friendly gesture and when you are snubbed you begin to wonder. i honestly don’t think he will ever make it to nathen’s or if by chance he does get a seat he’ll quickly find out what reality is.

At first it was very surprising to me that Scott did not leap at the chance to meet you JamminJoe, both because you are a fine seasoned veteran of the sport and by your own description, can hang with anyone though (perhaps, my addition) not the top ten. Now, having read both articles, youth can be very naive and immature. He clearly has pushed his own agenda by self-publishing a book, so he is experienced (no doubt with help) in getting some kinds of recognition. One thing which is a little suspicious is that it says that he was discharged from the Marines for back problems after graduating at the top of his class. If he really wants to pursue competitive eating, his best offer so far has been yours, Joe. Let’s give him his due for having great support from his parents and for having faced many obstacles in his young life but knowing very well that the article is filled with hyperbole which simply will not stand up to reality in the real world of competitive eating.

The comparison to Pete is apt. I while I have sympathy for Bickle’s tragic youth, he smartly seems to play it up like Pete does with his past every chance he can get with the media. Many eaters have had tragedies in their past, they just don’t wear it on their sleeves like these guys do. If Bickle continues to follow the Pete playbook, he’ll get out having to compete with top eaters by claiming IFOCE won’t let him eat. Both also work the college crowds well. It’s also interesting that he is trying to tap into the military community for a fan base, like Pete does with the weightlifing community. Like Pete, since they know little or nothing about competitive eating, he can cash in by selling them a few world champion eater tee shirts, hats, and paraphenelia on the web. Next he’ll work on getting some documentarian who knows nothing about competitive eating to follow him around and produce an indie film. Someday he may have to go up against a top eater, but by then the checks will already have been cashed.

    So what!

Why do you care what makes them happy

Well said Cory. If it makes them happy, so be it. But this is a forum about competitive eating, and information and opinions about that topic are shared and discussed. So yes, let them be “happy”, but it is simply not possible that every person who rides the train in competitive eating is the greatest. Once you give interviews and get into media appearances, you should do lots of homework and know your competition. Just sayin’

He seems to completely discount the other top ifoce eaters and sets his sights on Joey. He’s evidently a master craftsman at the tender age of 20. Good luck.

On the topic of religion being on of Bickles reasons/”callings” to competitve eating, isn’t gluttony one of the 7 deadly sins?
