2006 Baltimore Pancake contest
I recently came across this article and video on wjz.com about a pancake eating contest held at Pete’s Grille in Baltimore in November. Johns Hopkins student Liz Gilbert won the women’s division with 10.5 pancakes in a hour. She won the division in 2004 and was DQed in 2005. There is an article about Ms. Gilbert in the Johns Hopkins newsletter in which she describes why she competes in eating contests:
“Eating is such a faux-pas for women. Eating and food, for American women, is too big a deal. I like to see people take it less seriously, take their bodies less seriously, and this is something that’s emblematic of that,” she said.
“[Expletive deleted] it. I don’t care if people think I eat a lot. If you keep a regular diet and exercise and feel good about yourself, I don’t see why you can’t go out and do something excessive every once and a while.”
5th place men’s finisher Scott Yin also gets an article in the Johns Hopkins newsletter. Only the first name of the men’s division winner, Lee, is listed.

I realize that these people are not experienced eaters and are basically just doing this for fun, but 10.5 is the winning amount in an entire hour? I don’t mean to sound conceited, but I’m not sure I could eat 10.5 pancakes that SLOW. Maybe they were enormous sized pancakes or something, though it didn’t look like it in the video.

Is El Toro mad she’s snaking his nickname? And 10.5 does seem like a pitiful amount, I’m sorry. And she reversed at 9 one year? I mean, she should keep at it, but who are these lightweights she’s competing against? And she beat the guys? Maybe the pancakes had cement in them…

There are separate divisions for men & women, both having a $500 first place prize. The men’s winner ate around 15 pancakes I think.

I’m thinking maybe it was a typo in that article that the contest is an hour long. . .it just wouldn’t make sense. . .I mean 15 pancakes in an hour is one every 4 minutes. . .I’d expect even rank amateurs to do better than that. So I’m thinking the contest must be under 15 minutes, in which case the numbers would make a lot more sense.
