2008 Broadway at the Beach April 19
The contest schedule at IFOCE.com announces that this year’s edition of the eating contest held at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC will take place on April 19. The purse is $500 and registration starts “Wednesday, March 10” (which probably means March 12, registration is not currently available). The announcement says there is a possibility that the five traditional rounds could be fused into a single round with five different types of food.

If Boone were so fast, then why did he not prevail in more events? Why was he creamed in the AICE also? Anything 12 minutes or under is considered speed eating by most accounts.
He certainly was one of the fastest in a couple of minutes or so, in his day, and he is well above the average top 20 IFOCE eater today for a minute or 2, depending on the food. But some of the top eaters today are so fast he would not even hold a candle to them.
You think he ate that paltry quantity of 5 1/4 lbs of water-cooled, sun-scorched baked beans fast in Houston several years ago? Stick that amount in front of Pat Bertoletti and see what happens.
Or let Dale put on a disquise and set out to N’awlins’ next month and see if there is any point in the contest in which he is in first place. I don’t think he can eat 4 dozen in a minute.

The Scum has about as much chance of eating in an ifoce contest as I do.
I’m not claiming to be the best at speed, just damn good.
I think my 60 dumplings to the Scums 39, proved that the Scum is NOT the fastest.
In the US 5-6 minutes or less is speed eating.
In Japan it would probably be a half hour or less.
Rhonda Evans said
March 13, 2008 @ 10:19 am
Joe how did you come up with the 5 – 6 minutes? Perhaps the 10 and 12 minute contests the Fed holds are endurance events then.
I think the 5 – 6 minutes is your own rule, which fits neatly within the scope of your perceived abilities. But, I too will admit that in 5 – 6 minutes you are damned good–as is Joey, Pat B, Ian, Chip Simpson, Sonya, Dale (in Baked Beans), Don Lerman, Bob Shoudt (at least in Krystals), Hall Hunt, and a few others.
I really, really do wish you could eat with the IFOCE brethren in 5- and 6-minute contests. That’d be great.

Lets see if Badlands drives I guess its two passengers in the front not including the driver and three in the back. That might work. Gas to SC is around 3 fillups each way . Its about a 12 or 13 hr ride. $180 in gas round trip . Thats an estimate might be less. Tolls split in 5 ways is next to nothing. Im looking at $50 per person to SC round trip not including hotel. Damn thats a bargain considering the air fares these days. If that falls through I’ll drive but i dont do more than 2 passengers in the back one passenger in the front for my vehicle. US male in the front Arturo and Nate in the back or vica versa. We’ll work it out. On the way back we get some krystals to take home

I think of Competitive Eating like Track & Field
1 minute = 50 meters (pure speed)
2 minutes = 200 meters (sustained speed)
5 minutes = 400 meters (sustained speed + some strategy)
8 minutes = 800 meters (some capacity + some speed + strategy)
10 minutes = 1600 meters (moderate capacity + strategy + little speed)
12 minutes = 3200 meters (capacity + strategy + little speed)
30 minute + = Marathon (capacity)
Rhonda Evans said
March 13, 2008 @ 2:58 pm
TBK that’s not a bad rule of thumb. In fact, I’d say it is about as accurate (or more so) than I or anyone else could come up with.
I like the fact that it reflects that at least some speed is a needed attribute in contests up to 12 minutes. That’s definitely true.
This may just be my opinion, but I also believe that contests of 30 minutes and perhaps a bit longer require strategy to excel. Case in point — Barrick Burger (9 lbs and change). Looking at Sonya and Rich, they both made dramatic improvements from 2005 to 2006, from nearly an hour (48 minutes, 10 seconds for winner Sonya) to 27 minutes (for Sonya, with Rich a close second).
Did the stomach capacity of both eaters improve that dramatically in a year? I doubt it. They both continue to improve in their capacity, but at a slow, steady pace. They did learn, however, from the previous year, and they both altered their eating strategies, which enabled them to eat in a more efficient, timely manner.
Anyone who was there will probably agree, at least to some extent.
(Oh shit … another long post.)
Rhonda Evans said
March 13, 2008 @ 3:11 pm
Oh, and TBK, one other thing: It also depends on the food. Who would want to be eating baked beans for longer than 3 or 4 minutes, or grits for longer than 5. The easier the food packs going down, the less time it takes to get full.
(By the way, that 10-minute IFOCE grits contest was too damned long. Grits packs too easily. Poor Pat ate 21 lbs in 10 minutes. For having won, he must have felt absolutely awful, and poor 99-lbs Sonya ate 18 1/2 punds: damned near 1/5 of her body weight. That must have been BRUTAL! On a relative basis, that would be like Pat eating 35 lbs, or Joey eating 40! May the IFOCE learn from this. )
the boy king said
March 13, 2008 @ 3:35 pm
Some food Items are the equivalent of High Hurdles… like wings. Where technique could trump pure speed. But it if the distance became too long, then the technique would no longer become and advantage/disadvantage, and the capacity (endurance) would come into play.
And they only do hurdles at distances of 110 meters & 400 Meters.
And Steeple Chase proves that over a longer distance the technique becomes less relevant.
the boy king said
March 13, 2008 @ 3:39 pm
In the case of Marathon eating… improvement comes with experience. Start fast, Start slow, steady pace, jump out to a lead, etc. etc.
Not a capacity change, but Experience.

Shut up, Rhonda. The grits contest was just one of dozens throughout the year. Every eater knew what was coming and chose to go because they thought it would be fun. No one has complained that it wasn’t. Eaters like to test themselves in different kinds of contests.

Anonymous, 3:44: Telling me to shut up is bringing me to tears … in laughter. It is best that you don’t use your own name; it would sort of shock people, so I do understand the need for your anonymity. You know what I’m saying is true, however. You’re just pissed off because it would really cramp your style for things to change too much. Can’t say as I blame you, but watch your tone when addressing me young man — hands on hips! 🙂 Thank your lucky stars there’s lots of cyberspace between us, however.
Not only did every eater not know what was coming up, I would say virtually no one knew that such massive quantities would be consumed. At least one top finisher in the event did not expect to come within several pounds of his total, as noted by at least right here on eatfeats. Additionally, the IFOCE (nor many of the eaters) had no prior experience with grits. They have some now.

I may be a “table ender” and may not have any chance to win any money but I’ll be there anyway and will have fun being on stage again with some old friends and some new ones.
First palce or last place. Just getting up there makes everyone on stage a winner in the eyes of the people watching the event.

In my opinion, “Table Enders” are what brings spark, like and excitement to these events.
Fans may come to see Joey, Pat or Koby. But the same winners all the time gets boring Even in big football games you have other things to spark interest and add color like cheerleaders. Mostly women but sometimes men. Here in Jacksonville the jaguars have these huge men as an extra cheerleading squad. I recall the Chicago Bulls doing that too.
There are flag bearers, mascots, drum lines and many other things to help bring excitement. We “Table Enders” are many times that added excitement. Who can doubt the colorful antics of Super Paul. The horny hair of El Toro. The punk hair style of Pat. The petite figure of Sonya. The Japanese connection of Koby. The young boy image of Joey. The elder statesman of Rich. The rapper of Badlands. The hats and dreadlocks of Crazy Legs. The mask of Eater X. Each of these and more bring “color” to these events and are all crucial to a winning event.
We all know that nowadays, Joey and Pat will most likely take the top spot. Just like a football game, people come to see how much these two can put away. For some this might even be like NASCAR where fans come to see one or more crashes. In our terms that is called “reversal of fortune”.
What I’m trying to say is everyone on that stage brings something special to the event. Like in golf where Tiger will most likely win the event, it still takes everyone else to make it an event. What good would it be if everyone else stayed home and just let Tiger Woods play by himself. Like Badlands put it, Tiger was once a “Table Ender” too. We all start somewhere. We all cannot be at the top but we all can have fun and put on a good show while we are there.
After the Joeys and the Pats wipe the floor with their huge totals and easy wins, in the eyes of many, table enders are the shows within the show. Table Enders stand proud and be counted for the colorful heroes you are. Who else would be crazy enough to travel that far, spend all that time and money, just to bring home a T-shirt. No one else but the proud “Table Enders”. And who knows, as a table ender, you might just be the next Joey, Pat, Sonya or Koby. No matter where you stand on that stage, you are ALL CHAMPIONS.

anony march 26th 3:15 pm That is the funniest comment i have ever read on this site since its inception in 2005. I insist you be nominated for the comment of the month award or the year for that matter. As far as accusing me of badmouthing the sheas every chance i get and then spitting in their face when they dont allow me to compete is a very compelling theory coming from a cowardly moron like yourself that wont post his or her real name. One day you will be shocked to find out that my alleged “slamming of the Sheas” is merely an act contrived by all three of us so we could have a good laugh at your expense or any of the other fools on this site that are dumb enough to believe it. As far as temper tantrums, I havent thrown a major one since 1966 when my dad got lost driving trying to find the movie theatre that was playing the Batman movie with adam west. I finally did get a chance to watch it on tv years later.
