The Acme COO seems to believe that the top three finishers from last year will return: Pat, Juliet, and Legs. He doesn’t mention Sonya, so perhaps she will not attend. If she does, and if it’s only 8 minutes like last year I look for her to do —- how do they say it down there —- fawty (40) dozen. Pat will need to improve from his wining total last year to top her, assuming both show.

As Badlands Booker once said on his Web site years ago, Sonya Thomas is a superhero with a fork or a spoon. She’ll be ROCKIN’ the HOUSE with her blazing hand speed. Acme Oysters is her turf!

    Come get some boys!

“I am pleased that each of these top finishers is returning to New Orleans to compete in our classic event again this year,” said Lucien Gunter, chief operating officer of Acme Management Group.

I’m pretty sure that means Pat, Juliet and Crazy Legs.

And I’m pretty sure that this — “Scozzybone and Serignet have spent the off-season studying mollusks and refining their competitive eating knowledge and skillset, according to Acme officials.” — mean that Scozzybone and Damon Serignet will be eating.

    That’s 5 expected entrants.

Nate biller, jason erb, tim brown, probably skykobzo, and me will be there as well. So I guess that accounts for 9 people right there. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of people hitting 30+ this time around.

Thirty dozen is an awful lot of oysters in 8 minutes (using that standard versus 10 minutes since the shorter duration was used in last year’s contest). I don’t think there are more than six or seven people collectively in both the AICE and MLE who could do that.

I disagree, I think it is a lot more possible for a mid-level eater to hit 30 dozen than one would think. I don’t think it is in the same league as even doing 25HDB in 12 minutes. But yeah, 8 minutes is pretty fast. I would say given 12 minutes, 30 dozen would be simple for a lot of people. But in 8 minutes, it obviously takes some pretty good speed, technique, and not getting progressively grossed out. Now I’m not saying I’ll hit 30 dozen in 8 minutes, but I do feel it is possible if I had a really, really, really, really good day. But I won’t be happy unless I hit 25 dozen!

What the heck kind of combination is 50 cent and fallout boy? I can’t even imagine the fans of those in the same room together, heh heh. Girl jeans and glocks. Sorry you can’t make it this year! I didn’t have a frozen coffee booze drink last time, so I will make sure to. Something has to keep me awake enough to drink those hand grenades.

I suppose you could be right Kevin, but no one ever even hit a quarter in the quarter (25 dozen) until Sonya and Badlands did it in 2004, and that was a 10-minute event.

I really think if a mid-level eater can do 30 dozen, or even 25 dozen in 8 minutes, then he should be ranked much higher. So if you have a really good day you should move several spots higher in the rankings.

At least it seems that way to me, but then again I’m just a “Joe-bag-o-donuts.”

Last I talked to Hall Hunt, he said he’s coming, so he’ll probably be there too (another person with a good shot at 30 dozen plus).

Sounds like there will be quite a few people out some coin, given the typically small purse money. That’s unfortunate. Acme oysters has been traditionally treated like a major event (though a far cry from the top two), but with very limited publicity and little prize money. That’s a shame. It really is the premier event in the seafood genre.

Rhonda, just a reminder though I think that I am older than you. Have you forgotten about Hurricane Katrina and the fundraising done for Acme? The purse in this case is, to my way of thinking, irrelevant. The contest is a celebration of survival and resurrection of NOLA and Acme, and all Acme staff and owners, past and present, are to be honored. There is a difference between those things which have monetary value and those which are priceless. As I once said to some groaners a few years back, personally, I liked competitive eating better when it was all about honor in competition.

CLM actually I have not forgotten about that, as many people from the organization I am affiliated with gave up days and weekends to help them rebuild.
