Naader Reda has a preview of this evening’s West Coast Hot Dog Eating Championship at The Derby Deli in Mission Viejo, which will start at 6pm Pacific (9 pm eastern).
At least six competitors in the ten person field have eaten at least 30 hot dogs in a contest. Here are the personal bests according to the eatfeats databse (contests only, no exhibitions)
Takeru Kobayshi 64.5 HDB in 10 minutes
Tom Gilbert 34.5 12 minutes + OT
Rich LeFevre 34 HDB in 12 minutes / 31 in 10 minutes
“Furious” Pete Czerwinski 33 12 minutes + OT
Dale Boone 31 in 10 minutes
Johnnie Excel – 30 HDB in 15 minutes
Kevin Ross 20 HDB in 10 minutes
Naader Reda – 17.5 HDB in 12 minutes
Aaron Ybarra – 17 HDB in 12 minutes
Mary Bowers – 8 HDB in 12 minutes
If Tom Gilbert finishes ahead of Pete Czerwinski, it would be the third time in a row he has bested “Furious” Pete and Tom Gilbert would have a strong claim as the top non-IFOCE competitive eater besides Kobayashi. Here are their head to head results:

West Coast last yr does not count. It was Pete’s 2nd contest of the day. & I believe they split $$$ on West Coast.
Bartolini’s was clear & convincing though.

I’m kind of… shocked, not just today, it happens in some contest from time to time. When Koby eats 47 HDBS, pat eats just sightly over 4.5 pounds of chiken wings… i wonder how much the actual food impacts eating (aside of the obvious size diference if there is any). At the same time, i don’t picture derby offering contestants cold hot dogs or cold wings to the eaters – for the sake of the second example i just gave a sentence ago. I can picture them not being in the best condition, like say 27 degrees (celsius here), but unless you are a very picky eater that shouldn’t affect perfomance that much… Seriously, there are times when i feel like, judging only by the numbers, i can beat those top guys. It just draws my attention, don’t focus on this last claim.
Hope to know how the rest of the contestants placed.

Wow nowhere near the numbers i thought would be put up by Kobe. Also if i was them i would nt let that DALE( I QUIT) Boone bk in another one of they contest. Other than that it went like i thought it would with Kobe, tom n Pete didnt see anyone else that could match up with KObe.

Tom doesn’t get the accolade Pete gets because he is perceived as a boring eater with no personality, even though he’s beating Pete left and right.

Just a matter of time before they get sick of paying Kobayashi a very handsome appearance fee for beating low level competition . There will come a time when they will ask Koby to try and pursuade Chestnut Sonya and the great eaters of MLE to compete against him. When he fails to do so its all over for him

What are you doing Rich Lafevre,? You’ll never beat Koby, you can’t beat Gilbert or Pete, and they wont pay your transportation. Can you afford to keep on losing?

First of all, conserned fan, it’s “concerned” (not conserned) and secondly, none of us will ever beat Koby and I can afford my own transportation to drive 540 miles (round trip) even if I didn’t win $750 for beating everybody else in the contest. Maybe I just like to compete and not sit on the sidelines and whine about other eaters like you do.

Hey, in CE, as with most things in life, it’s not the destination that’s so important, but the journey. Rich’s enjoyment of the ride is what keeps him going. I know of no other eater within 20 years of his age who can eat as much as Rich, or who is as healthy.
Rich is a fun-loving youngster masquerading as a senior citizen. The man’s got it going on!
If his mug and bio were on bottles of Ensure sales would go through the roof!

If you look at the expression on Ross and Naader faces after Boone is introduced, its quite obvious that he had words with them prior to the intro’s

For concerned fan.Dont worry about Lafevre , it’s all about his ego..He has to be around people who think he is so great..At his age he does more harm to his body than a 20 year old.I hope you know what your doing to your body..Watch out for yourself Lafevre and please be very carefull, your a good guy..

After viewing past totals of furious pete and goose, i think we can conclude that the hot dogs they ate in IL were oscar meyer weiners and the ones they ate in Viejo CA were closer to regulation size. The West Coast event were indeed regulation size which proves after all those years in which Boone made it to the Nathans finals. he obviously got over on the judges who miscalculated his inflated totals. 16 or 17 is about Boone;s max would you agree?

Have you ever seen him with his hands resting inside his overalls at the end of a event… just sayin. I say strip his ass down and you’ll find a half dozen in his bibs…
