Red em all . All snoozers if you ask me. The only one of interest is Lerman winning Zahn’s which should be in the category of about freakin time for eater that consistantly loses and still predicts victory. Juliet beating Tim Janus for the first time is no great shakes. When she beats Sonya, then we can start whipping out the confetti. Top CE TV program? Gutbusters1 an 8yr old show still reign supreme over the shows mentioned for 2009

    OJ,
For the prediction of top eater of 2010, I think you should add Humble “Bob” Shoudt (on a tear through 2009), Tim Janus (broke 50 HDB barrier in 2009) and Pat B (always a threat). While they may be longer shots against Joey and Koby, they are as good and much more experienced than Ben Monson. If he’s listed they should be as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, SB. Those names have been added. I will change any “Other” votes to those three if requested.

I think clearly the biggest surprise was US Male’s victory over stiff competition in crawfish

C’mon. The biggest surprise performance of 2009 has to be Monson over Chestnut. That’s one of the biggest competitive eating upsets of ALL TIME!

Top Competitve Eating Television Program: May I beg the courts indulgence for a moment before the votes are in, Got to be Gutbusters one, hands down no contest worthy of an oscar or emmy award.

Monson over Chestnut is indeed one of the biggest upsets of all time.

Also, considering how quickly Koby was written off from consideration in having a chance to win KSO VI, you could even make an argument there too, as stupid as it might seem. When interviewed, I can’t remember Bob, X, Pat B, or Chestnut himself even mentioning Koby as being a threat to win.

I knew otherwise, and if they EAT HDBs in 2010, Koby will be a major threat to win that too.

Nathan (and I’m not blaming Male), Dave’s receiving the first place trophy for crawfish was definitely the most surprising finish (on paper) in 2009 … for damned sure … because every other eater in the contest, as well as members of the media who shot the event, were in a state of shock!

I’m also not surprised at all that Juliet won clams. It is a fact that, all other things being equal, women have better hand speed and finger dexterity than men. (Koby, Pat B, and Booker are exceptions to that rule.)

Eater X is a great eater with phenomenal stomach capacity, but hand speed is not his best asset. Ask him; I doubt he’ll deny it.

Steak, I agree with you that Bob, Tim, and Pat B should probably be mentioned for the 2010 Top Eater. However, look how long it took the aforementioned eaters to log a win over the world’s number one-ranked eater —- about three years.

Still, I cannot even imagine Ben out-eating Koby or Joey in one of the two majors in 2010. Should those two retire, it might be a different story.

Ben is a tremendous up-and-coming talent, but my imagination is not quite expansive enough to concede to him the Mustard Belt or the Krystal Trophy.

As great as Pat Bertoletti is in jalapeno peppers, and as much as I like Sonya, I thought it was a shocker when she bested him in the La Costena jalapeno contest in September. Pat had been (probably still is) the best jalapeno eater the world has ever known, demolishing all comers the last several years, to include Joey (St Patty’s Day Chowdown on Spike).

And after the end of the contest, Sonya was laughing, smiling, and looking like she could go another several minutes.

When it comes to jalapeno eating, those two are in a class by themselves, and that’s saying a lot, because Erik, Eric, and Rich are awesome eaters of that food.

That was beyond this 5-year old’s mental acumen. Next year I’m sure I’d have figured it out, however.

I just wonder why the World Champion Dale Boone isn’t mentioned here? Oh, never mind. Boone wins only 50% of this competitions. That is 0% against people in his own organisation. And 100% against people in countries where they have no organisations. Never mind. Boone always loses against professsional eaters. Even inside his own organisation.

    Munch, you commented:

“The biggest surprise performance of 2009 has to be Monson over Chestnut. That’s one of the biggest competitive eating upsets of ALL TIME!”

I agree with your 2nd part that “That’s one of the biggest competitive eating upsets of ALL TIME!”. But it isn’t really “The biggest surprise performance of 2009 has to be Monson over Chestnut” because Ben absolutely killed on his challenges – the pizza, the Big Texan, Sadie’s, the Kitchen Sink in SF, and he did really well in the NM burrito IFOCE contest – so I would say his dominating of Chestnut was not too surprising to me. Maybe surprising to happen so soon but it was only a matter of time…

Joey hasn’t exactly had a dominant year.

In 2009 he lost in contests won by five different people —- X, Pat, Bob, Koby, and Ben —- all of which were eating (not drinking) events. Joey’s the best food drinker, I agree, but the best competitive eater he isn’t.

The only person to top Koby all year was Joey, and head-to-head Koby won two of three against Joey, the most recent of which was very decisive —- by a Krystal dozen. Again, Koby won the two eating events; Joey won the drinking contest.

In a way, it’s Joey that’s “The Tsunami,” because he’s awesome using the wet stuff; when he comes “ashore” he loses steam.

But one thing I like about Joey, is that even though he’s the biggest money earner, he’s in it to have fun. That’s the way it should be. No one can stay on top forever, and all great eaters know that.

Good point A-Bomb. Also a good point by Rhonda. Joey lost to five different people in 2009? Wow. Is the competition just getting better or is Joey slipping?

Joey is not slipping. After you get to such a level your rate of improvement is bound to slow down. The others have just been on a tear.

However, in fairly judged contests, I’d say all the eaters in the top 10 have pretty much improved all they’re going to improve.

CE is on a much loftier level today than even 3 or 4 years ago.
