Takeru Kobayashi vs. Bob Shoudt & Joey Chestnut head to head results

Apparently pro wrestler Ric Flair’s adage, “to be the man, you gotta beat the man”, does not apply to IFOCE rankings. “Notorious” Bob Shoudt was moved ahead of Takeru Kobayashi in the latest top 50 despite never having defeated him in nine previous contests, which are listed after the jump.

The general public only knows Kobayashi.

They barely know he’s been beaten.

& when they do know, they rarely know by whom.

When talking about eating these days, they bring up M v F even before Kobe.

Makes no sense at all. Soon people will know the great Bob Shoudt. He kicks Chestnut’s ass half the time. Koby is uesterday’s news. A nobody!

I think Gent Joe is far superior to Kobayashi, perhaps even the great Bob Shoudt. He won’t admit it. He’s far too humble.

Despite the head to head results, bob has more wins last year, to be the man you must win in which koba has only won once in 2009 vs bobs 9 wins

It all comes down to participation. I agree Koby is better than Bob, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify Koby’s high ranking if he only eats in two or three contests per year.

The more I think about it, the more I can understand why Bob was given the higher ranking. Joey consistently beats Koby, which makes him better than Koby. But Bob has beaten Joey a fair amount of times, which implies that Bob is on par with Koby (except in bun foods). Bob gets the edge because of participation.

What megamunch? You need to recheck the Koby versus Joey stats along with the margins of victory. Have you been alive?

The fair thing to do is drop Koby totally from the national rankings, but don’t insult the greatest eater of all time by placing him behind someone who has never, nor would ever top him in 100 years in any contest. As a matter of fact, perhaps there should be a requirement for an eater to participate in a minimum number of contests within the past year in order to be ranked. Say four minimum, with exhibitions not counting.

It looks like “Participation Rate” and “Winning %” would be necessary criteria for a potential Eatfeats ranking system.

Anon436, I just checked the EatFeats database and Joey has 4 wins and 2 losses to Koby in the last three years. Koby won ’09 Krystals and the ’09 P’Zone challenge. Joey has won ’07, ’08, and ’09 Nathans plus ’08 Krystals. I’m not even counting the two wins Joey has against Koby in the MLE Chowdown in October 2007 since Koby was clearly still hampered by this jaw injury (those contests were hard to watch).

So whether you want to call four wins in six contests “consistently” beating someone is a matter of opinion. The fact is, Joey beats Koby more often than not.

I don’t think participation needs to be an overwhelming factor in a new rankings system, but it should be considered. We shouldn’t over think it by making the ranking system confusing with a bunch of statistical analysis. Just look at who has beaten whom, who has done what in the past few months, open it up to debate and come up with some rankings that aren’t influenced by “marketing needs” or personal relationships.

What about Curry Chicken in Singapore in 2008. Koby won by over two pounds. Koby has beaten Joey three of the last four times the two have faced off (Krystals, chicken, Pzone), with Joey’s lone win in dogs. The dog win by Joey was fairly close. Two of Koby’s three wins, including the most recent, were by substantial margins. I’d put my money on Koby again next week in Singapore when they eat Chinese Wonton. Koby will probably run away and hide, because he wants to make a statement.

good luck finding a way to generate rankings that aren’t influenced by personal relationships. ths website is not the solution.

Forgot about the Singapore contest. I saw that on Koby’s win list, but didn’t think Joey was there.

  15. Artificial rankings... all made up by the Shays said

Competitive eating is a joke. Just like Dale Boone makes himself world champion, despite all his losses, the Shays make Joey and Koby 1 and 2. Koby, and he REALLY is good, but if this were a TRUE ranking system, Koby would NOT be number 2, competing in only 2 IFOCE competititions every year. Whether IFOCE, or anything else, competitive eating is a joke. It’s ruled by the respective “heads or organizations” making up the rankings. In a realitively random way. Joey wouldn’t be number 1 in IFOCE, if it were somewhat “objective”. Bob, probably would be number 1 now. As for competitive eating all over the world, then we we would have to IGNORE Dale Boone, and look at Pete, Bob, MAYBE Joey, Koby, Pat, and Ben.

Pete, Bob, Joey, Koby, Pat, Ben. The top 6 competitive eaters in the world. BAR NO ONE. Regardless of stupid organizations like IFOCE and others…
