It doesn’t matter how much competition Ben has in Vegas, the question is how many he will eat. 38 HDBs (my guess) against no competition is still 38 HDBs.

Maybe (no. Infact, rather they admit it or not) it’s because a lot of these vets are threatned by him, he’s young, tall and in fantastic shape. The same hate Pete gets on these boards too… Ben makes these guys less significant in a world where competetive eating is pretty much the only thing they got.
Facts are people would much rather see those who are easier on the eyes like Ben, Pete, TK, Sonya, Erik the Red, Tim Janus and Pat eat over some forty something sixty plus pound over weight, balding guy with bad facial hair stuffing, their faces.

Envy: I think your right that envy is partly the cause that drives some negative comments about Ben. But, I think a significant portion of that negativity stems more from intial bragging and trash talk that Ben participated in early on in his new career. He’s young and has apparently learned to tone down that talk, letting his eating do the talking for him. But the problem is he can’t control his buddies from participating in that kind of behavior. If I were Ben, I’d have a talk with his so-called coat tailers he hangs with, who obviously know nothing about the inner workings of CE, and let them know that they are not doing him any favors and STFU. It actually makes Ben look diminished when his wannabe buddies chime in about other eaters and crazy claims of him being the second coming of eating. If Ben aspires to be at the level of Sonya, Bob, Pat, Joey and Koby, learn by example how they handle being at the top, particularly when it comes to controlling your friends from talking about things they know nothing about. Ben’s got a long career in CE and I think he would rather spend it being a class act rather than some college kid with dumbass buddies.

I don’t know. I think it would be kind of fun to welcome a new eater with a big ego and the skills to back it up. The other eaters might not like it, but oh well. Muhammad Ali used to say “I’m the greatest!” He wouldn’t have been nearly as exciting if he had gone around saying “I’m okay, I guess. There are a lot of better fighters out there. I’m just happy to have a chance to box and do something I love.”

As Ben’s best friend,
I can assure you while Ben is confident in his ability (and he has every right to be), he isn’t a pompous snob nor does he routinely look down on others. Again, this is an internet forum in virtual space where the temporary ideas and thoughts of a person are what is left to exist as a mark of a time that has passed. It says nothing about the entirety of a person or what they are like outside of this box that you stare at for answers. If you make assumptions based off a few characters in space and a rearranged alphabet then you have more problems than you realize.
I can also assure you that he doesn’t walk around with a posse either, he’s actually pretty reserved when it comes to letting people into his inner circle. Besides, who doesn’t appreciate support in whatever he/she may decide to undertake. Who doesn’t welcome the applause and the pat on the back? Should he go at it alone to prove to a nameless anonymous poster that he is different than what that person has already chosen him to be. We can’t be everything for everyone at all times. There is a saying that goes “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as WE areâ€, so if there is any negativity directed towards Ben, it is simply an open window to the inner workings of the individual who is spouting it.
Since that ‘hater’ won’t be winning any competitions, the only recognition that person will be getting is a reaction on a forum, if that. So we all seek something, even when we claim we don’t. Negativity feeds on negativity, after all misery loves company. It’s ironic that people would state he has a posse, when it seems that the followers of the ‘Hate Ben’ seem to gather new members as new challenges are met and won. A Minion of have – not’s.
While Ben may be young in age, he’s much wiser than most people I’ve met. He’s gone through some serious adversity in his life and appreciates everything that comes his way no matter how trivial it is. But of course, this isn’t something that someone staring at a screen would know because all you have are a string of letters and video feed to base your opinions on. That might be asking much for you to understand.
I don’t post much on this site, but I do read every day and I get a chuckle at all the love and hate Ben receives. Unless it’s him having some fun and posting anonymously (which I highly doubt it is but would find amusing if it was). I can assure you it’s not his “dumba$$ college buddies”…
Best regards,
~Damon

Hey Damon, don’t sweat it, your don’t have to defend yourself or Ben. Take the comments and attitude on this site with a grain of salt. The true heart of CE is out on the road, comments are mostly gossip and attempts to bate people here. Regarless, I do think it is fun to be a part of the CE online community which has its epicenter here on Eatfeats – I think you, Ben, myself and all other eaters can and should comment on this site (sepecially since we know everyone reads it pretty much every day) so we have a voice, I wouldn’t get too discouraged, we have just as much ownership of it as the anonymouses.
And we are all waiting with anticipation to see what kind of crooked numbers Ben throws up today.

Thanx Erik,
You’re one of the more stand up guys I’ve met so far on the circuit; I also commend your honesty and courage to post under your name. Good luck at your qualifier, unless of course I’m at the same one. Congratulations on tying the knot too.
