Ok, while I understand the Sheas are trying to grow the sport, I found these statements/quotes a bit ridiculous:

“Competitive eating is more than Fourth of July novelty these days. And co-president of the International Federation of Competitive Eating and Major League Eating’s George Shea sees the sport holding its own next to baseball and football in the near future.

‘We’re taking over hockey,’ Shea said. ‘It is my prediction that we become a more powerful franchise than the NHL this year. The big three by the end of this year will be football, baseball and competitive eating’.”

Ok…the NHL is going to take in 2.9 billion dollars in 2011. Are you telling me IFOCE does anywhere near that????

Stephanie “Boo-Hoo” Wu, do you drink alot at night? Really you have too much time and way too much thought process on these meaningless minor topics.

The Sheas are definitely smoking something because Im sensing alot of hallucination going on here. I order the Sheas to 60 days of rehab. Curling, jai-lai and professional bowling take in more money plus the participants are able to seek out their own sponsors. You will never hear Zhun Zo Choo asking permission to compete on another Jai-lai court in order to make a few extra dollars. He is paid by his organization, although not alot.

Give the competitive eating reign to some people who WANT to make it a huge well known entity because of their love of the sport. Then all eaters would merge as one. Imagine a table with Joey, Pat, Furious Pete, Menchetti & Sonya along with some of the new young blood out on the west coast. Challenges would spring up everywhere to draw in the business of these great eaters because they would be allowed to do them at will.

Enough from me. Grabbing a beer and going back to bed

Don’t ya get it yet??? The mle is a circus side show with the eaters as the freaks. Few people appreciate what competitive eating really is. mle doesn’t do anything to contradict that either, just as their on stage banter is that of a circus ring master. The sad thing is many of the eaters believe what mle claims and that CE is the path to fortune and fame. If they get lucky it might just get bigger than the national spelling bee but that’s about it.

Stephanie, until (if ever) MLE gets a grip on the most basic concepts of competitive eating (consistent rules, judging, weighing, counting), CE will remain a sideshow—-a novelty.

Taking over hockey? Ah … crap! Well, perhaps in one way—-more fighting with officials making ridiculous counts/calls.

Even with the proclaimed overtaking of hockey as one of the big three sports, I somewhat doubt Ovy will want to opt out of his 13-year, $124 million contract with the Caps to springboard into the sport that will overtake the NHL——-even if he could eat 100 HDBs at Nathan’s.

Security get real Menchetti and Furious Pete have no interest in making the sport a well know entity. They love the money not the sport. I am sure Menchetti wont dispute that comment so he comes off as dedicated sportsman but i think he will tell you straight up “just show me the money”

Stephanie considering that you are not the greatest eater in the world why dont you place a phone call to Shea communications and inquire about a high level position in marketing so you can clean up the so called mess you think they left behind. You are way behind in the times my girl. Those comments from George Shea were made 7 or 8 yrs ago.

“IFOCE and MLE conduct about 85 events a year, each with 15 participants in it, Shea said. This means that serious eaters can make bank like Chestnut, who made $220,000 in 2010.”

Somebody needs to inform this newspaper so they can issue a retraction, they added one extra zero to that total.

His 2010 cash winnings according to this website totaled $36,250.00. Just how do you expect oj to check?

Stephanie, if you’ve ever been to an IFOCE event, you would know that the Sheas make the same “ridiculous” statements over and over again. It’s part of the schtick. It’s what they do. They also always talk about it soon being an olympic event. Do you really think people take what they say seriously? It’s all just to garner attention and get people to talk about it. You should know that by now.

Stallion Italian, OJ has powers few know about and even less can comprehend.lol There may be there forms of income other than cash winnings ie; apperence fees undisclosed, nathens payments etc, etc

Even though I don’t take George seriously, I love his lines! If George Shea can’t generate excitement for competitive eating, no one can.

I might not (and I don’t) agree with 90 % of what he says, George is in a class by himself as IFOCE emcee. The man can put asses in the seats better than any other CE emcee.

The clear second best emcee was Mike Castellano. I loved Mike, he was witty, sincere, and very blue collar—-very likeable.

Richard is pretty good and Ryan (I used to think OJ was Ryan; it’s not.) tried very hard and got better with experience.

Oh wow, who gets to be classified as their block’s Captain Crunch cereal eating champ this weekend? Different day, same old shitty boring lines. How about giving the eaters the proper cred by talking about what they have really done

Yes, I know that there are other forms of income but what makes anyone think that oj has access to them. Be realistic. The Sheas are PR people who throw out numbers. Why not ask Joey directly or any of the other eaters. Not holding my breath for any answers. Did Joey ever say directly to anyone how much he has earned? Even if he is quoted, we all know about media and facts and being quoted out of context or misquoted. On the segment about the wing eating contest the reporter referred to Sonya Thomas as having won the New York hotdog contest.
