Las Vegas qualifier press release
A press release about next month’s Nathan’s qualifier in Las Vegas can be found in a myspace blog. The entrants listed in that document:
The Las Vegas qualifier, which last year witnessed the historic breaking of the 50-dog barrier by #2-ranked Joey Chestnut, appears poised to make history again. Third-ranked Pat Bertoletti has claimed that he will break the world record of 53 ¾ hot dogs and buns in Las Vegas. Bertoletti, a Chicago native, recently upset Chestnut at the St. Patrick’s Day Showdown on Spike TV, and seems to have momentum going into hot dog season. Bertoletti’s main obstacle, besides history, will be Rich “The Locust” LeFevre, the #8-ranked gurgitator in the world. A local mother and daughter team, Debi and Robyn Affentranger, will also be on hand to compete.
The contest, to be held Thursday, May 3 at 3 p.m., is an official qualifying round of the Nathan’s Famous worldwide hot dog eating circuit.

I really like and respect Pat, but he doesn’t have near the dog eating ability that Joey does, let alone Kobayashi. It makes for good press and stirs interest when he says he will break the current world.
However, I would literally fall out if Pat were able to eat more than 45 or 46 dogs. But having said that, Pat has proven to be one of the top eating talents the world has seen to date!

Yes, but would you have expected Joey to eat 50 at last year’s qualifier? The periodic falling out of chairs is what makes this sport great! Plus, if the conditions are right, I definitely think Pat has it in him to eat over 50.

I’ll make the prediction now: Pat will beat Joey and give Koby a run for his money this year (assuming there’s money to be ran for).

So many Eaters are in striking distance now of Koby. While some of you believe that Koby is unbeatable, I have opened the realm of possiblities that he can be beat and possibly by more than one person.
Joey proved that he can push himself to that threshhold, is he willing to do it again? Can you imagine the strain of last year? I was deeply impressed.
Pat proved it at Krystals too. I hadnt expected him to be THAT good, but hell, he really is. Let the man eat 60 HDB’s!
The rest of the top 10 will likely makes strides as well in their qualifiers. Look at Chip! Cant wait for the rest of the qualifiers to get underway!

I am making a prediction. I predict that Pat will break Joey’s Las Vegas qualifier record. I am not saying the world record but I think he will hit 51.

Chip you could be right. I did not expect Pat to eat 76 Krystals. He surprised me. Chip I think you can eat 55. You will shock the world.

The record is the real glory, and it is time for an American to take it back… Pat has the talent and motivation, he will be the recorder holder.

That is true SB if you define striking distance as being within a dozen or so-otherwise only Joey is there. (Luther)

I think Pat can Break the record in Vegas. But I think he should wait until the Fourth. I think if he breaks it in Vegas, Koby will be ready on the Fourth. I think a surprise attack would be better. Either way good luck Pat.

The Las Vegas record will be broken if it needs to be to win the qualifier…I’d put it at 2 to 1 odds….Why bother if not neccessary – makes for a bigger target!!
Pat has to be (sorry, Rich) the heavy favorite to win, put him at 1 to 5 odds, with Rich at 3 to 1, and all other ranked eaters at 15 to 1, and the field at 40 to 1 (Hey, you never know, there’s always that new skinny quiet person that shows up)….

BUT THESE GUYS ARE CHAMPIONS!
They cant stop themselves from doing their best
Soon as Pat smells those Nitrates, the Berserker will rage upon those plates of five!

If those chairs keep breaking it seems that they need to be replaced. Thats awful for the eaters that like to sit down.

I like these posts and varying opinions. The varying views are keep things interesting. Also, I love being in the minority with my opinion, as I often am.
Pat is a speed demon and has outstanding stomach capacity in a 12 minute contest. But Joey is the American master for 12 minutes.
I can see Pat cruising through perhaps 40 HDBs in 10 minutes, and then in the last two minutes his pace will have slowed to about 3 per minute. Pat will not come within 6 dogs of Joey at Coney Island, nor will any other American.
This is surely not a slight against any other eater. It’s just that Joey is in a class by himself, save Koby, who is in an even higher echelon of talent.
I really hope I am proven wrong, because it will be more exciting. But this middle aged gal was not born yesterday and I will not go gently into that good night when I believe I am right.

Totally agree and I expect Pat to bring the belt back to the U.S. of A. on July 4. I think if pushed Pat can eat 60 – 65.

Where is Juliet going. I will be there rooting her on. She will push Joey and Pat to the point where they will challenge Kobayashi, if she does not beat her herself. I think her stomach capacity is well beyond 24 pounds.

Romeo,
Lay off the Ganga!! Juliet won’t even beat Sonya this year. Also She doesn’t even have close to a 24lb capacity.

Saying Juliet won’t even beat Thomas is a big insult to Juliet. While Thomas is still not a bad eater by any means, and is still one of the top 3 or 4 females ever, she does get beat by most every eater these days and is not even in Juliet’s league. Juliet can probably eat 60 dogs. Sonya is lucky to eat half that anymore. If they ate at the same qualifier you would see that I am right. On July 4th Juliet will beat her so badly it will leave Thomas in tears and probably make her throw in the towel forever.

I wish I had the stones to make a prediction like that. I don’t know where that came from but it’s pretty amusing. My goal for every contest is to break the record, but 54 is a bold prediction. I will do my best to get there, but I make no promises. I appreciate all the support, I think the numbers accross the board will be impressive and unbelievable. This year is going to be the best year, look out for Chip, Joey, and Tim on the 4th.

As far as the two female wannabes are concerned its look out for Chip Joey Tim Koby Pat Bertoletti Pat Philbin H. Bob S. Miller C. Legs D. Boone Larue Goldstrin Subich etc etc. The first five I mentioned will finish at least 2 dozen dog/buns ahead of both of them. Then finally maybe after they get humiliated big time on national tele the world will be shed of them! Then I can get back to following it as a sport and not a bunch of mismatched laughers.
If they want to compete thats fine but they need to catfight among themselves. At least if they both went to the A.I.C.E it would help so I dont have to watch the mismaches on T.V. Let the men over there take turns kicking their butts. They might actually like the opportunity. Or send them to Japan and let that Sone Gal and Shirota take turns whipping them.

Pat I am expecting you Chip Joey and Koby to all finish with at least 55. Tim is almost as good but can probably handle only 50. This will be a banner year with so many people breaking the old record. My next wish is for at least a dozen men to eat more than 37 so that they will take down that damn ridiculous low life female record off the C. Island billboard. I predict that at least a dozen people at the final table will do just that and eat more than 37. If someone cant outeat that number they dont even deserve to be there. Best wishes to you Pat and to all real men at the table.

You are being a gentleman I guess but if they are supposed to represent their sex they set a pathetic example. I can eat more as a snack than they can eat at a competition. Billie Jean King must be shaking her head in humiliation. Then again she got the message too and quit.

Pat ate 42 (might have been 44 – I can’t remember). Rich ate 33 and Mongo had around 23. Kevin Ross and Jason Erb each had around 14. Rumor has it that El Toro vomitted twice.
