New ranking system
To improve the rankings based on head to head competition, I have added the benchmarks of money won in non Nathan’s MLE contests over the past year and personal bests in Nathan’s contests over the past 12 months. The current top 10 in the new system:
win % | Prize $ | HDB | $HDB | %$HDB | ||||||

10 | “The Lovely” Juliet Lee | 61.1 | 12 | $950 | 14 | 36 | 8 | 11 | 11.5 | 10 |
An explanation of the columns:
- win % Winning percentage over the past 12 months. This was listed in a previous post The column on the right has the ranking of that value.
- Prize $ Money won in non-Nathan’s MLE contests held during the previous 365 days. If a competitor did not win any cash, he or she tied for last place with $0. The column on the right has the ranking of that value.
- HDB Personal best in a Nathan’s qualifier or finals from the past year. If there is no Nathan’s result from the past year, the field is empty. The column on the right has the ranking of that value.
- $HDB If a hot dog personal best is present, this column contains the average of prize money ranking and the hot dog ranking, otherwise it is set to the prize money ranking
- %$HDB This column contains the average of the winning percentage ranking and the $HDB column. This value is sorted and ranked to produce the final rankings in the leftmost and rightmost columns.
Ties in the rankings result in averaging the placements. If there was a two way tie for third, both places would receive a rank of 3.5.
A listing of all competitors with two or more MLE contests in the past year is available after the jump.

This is better, but it still doesn’t take into account beating ranked eaters versus non-ranked, incomplete results for some contests, and actually competing in more that two contests in a year.

OJ, can you do one of these for the non-MLE eaters?

But there’s no head-to-head consideration. Also you should have used average prize money won per contest instead of total prize money won, which is more the result of persistence and lack of a social life on weekends than it is the result of excellence.

I agree with 12:32. If you are serious, you will be in MLE. AICE/APE and WLOCE are for losers.

Gee… now that’s not to confusing… could you make it more complicated? Wow… the yearly winnings are pitiful.

Will the Champ will beat Seiken hands down in any food competition. It will never happen anyway so why talk about it. Seiken doesn’t walk the walk when challenged to an eating one-on-one.

This is some interesting comparative ranking that makes some good sense. I totally support a more scientific ranking system. Now honestly, I think strength of schedule or strength of victory is a major component which is missing… that greatly affects win percentage. Average placing is something which could add value too.

The big question is whether Seiken will be ranked #49 or #50.

I haven’t figured out how to handle hot dog personal bests for non-IFOCE rankings. I am probably going to use results from any 10 minute hot dog contests.

as Booker said in his rap song referring to aice. Besides coondog all your eaters are duds you remind of nerds around chicks. Who is coondog anyway?

105 that is an unfair assumption. The song was written during different times different era. Most of the eaters were duds back then and the organization was run by a nut case. . The guy that runs the show now is a ok. He is not about slamming other organizations and they have a few good eaters to boot

OJ this is a marvelous ranking system You should have studied data science but i have a sneaky suspicion that was your major from the get go. Brian Seiken at 40 is probably on the money but should be a few notches higher . Precise calculations on your part which leaves marginal room for error. Maybe major league eating should take a page out of your page and study these vital stats when updating rankings instead of wasting time on twitter with 13 yr old absurdities such as the gurgitator

There is a fine line drawn between a pro eater and an amateur. If you earned more than $1000 a year eating in competition MLE or independent than you earned pro status. If not you are not considered a pro by any stretch of the imagination and your probably do not belong at the table. You can factor in seniority or eating experience when determining pro or non pro status only because the sport has not and probably will never gain the rep of having thousands of multi $$$$ players at the table
