No amateur contest at 3 Brothers Pizza
Pizza Marketing Quarterly has a press release about Saturday’s contest at Three Brothers Pizza in Greenbelt, Maryland. There will be no amateur competition this year; the undercard will consist of a contest between two local high schools. Pat Bertoletti, Tim Janus, Bob Shoudt, Sonya Thomas, Juliet Lee and 13 unnamed professionals are listed as expected entrants. There will also be an autograph session for eaters along with a pizza tossing exhibition.

It’s always nice when PIZZA MARKETING QUARTERLY beats the IFOCE when it comes to pre-announcements about events.

Kind of like ‘Circus of the Stars’. I miss seeing Gary Colemen Rocket through the air, only to be caught by Dana Plato swinging on a trapeze. I really wish I got into this Pizza contest.

“13 unnamed professionals” kind of like “and the rest” from the Gilligan’s Island theme song.

The whole card is packed… its a who’s who in competive eating. Brickhouse Braunstein schedualed to make an apperence. Haven’t seen him since Chinook! Conti, Seiken, the fearless Federighi. The line up makes the 4th o July look like a cocktail weenie reception! Did I mention “Pizza Pie” Pete Meriniki … with his award-winning smile will b there? One question …where is Larry “the Legend” McNiel? He’s been there 2 yrs in a row! didn’t think he would miss it. Placed in the money one of the yrs, maybe both yrs.
Great Guy! he’ll be missed… Look out for Shoubt! No doubt could pull off an upset and take Bertolletti. The question is …Who is the Master? Sho-Nuff (shogun of Harlem)

And in the Pizza Cage Match of the year, we have Philly Pete vs. Beautiful Brian vs. US Snail Male. Almost a pie between all three, that would be a sight to behold.

I like the “crust” rule of having to finish them before you can go on to the next pie ..I believe that’s new.

Pat should threepeat this contest. He is better than Chestnut in many nondunking foods. Given Humble Bob’s rise lately in the dunking foods, some of that talent might cross over to some of the nondunking breaded food contests, like this one. But even his very best effort will come within three slices of Pat Bertoletti’s.
And though I am admittedly Sonya- (and Juliet) biased, I expect Sonya to approach or slightly exceed her total of 20 from last year’s event, assuming the food is pretty much the same, with respect to texture and size. Eater X is always very tough. Juliet needs more focus and speed, but I do expect her to eat 13 or so. So, in a close one, here’s my prediction:
Pat: 22 1/2
Sonya: 20
Tim: 19 1/2
Humble Bob: 19
_____________________________
Juliet: 13 1/2
Alan Goldstein: 13
Arturo 12 1/2
Pat Philbin: 12
U.S. Male: 10

Good predictions, Rhonda. I’d put Pat around 24 slices though.

Thanks for the props Rhonda but I personally would not be satisfied with 9th out of about 15-16 eaters. If there is one food I love more then wings, it’s pizza (hot or cold). It will be a great event with alot of big names.

Tim Janus could beat Sonya Thomas – he’ll get 2nd.
