Michael Phelps & other Olympians calories per day

The New York Post has an article about the diet of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps which consists of 3 meals containing 4,000 calories each for a total of approximately 12,000 calories. Phelps’ typical breakfast:

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase “Breakfast of Champions” by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

The Wall Street Journal Health Blog and Bleacher Report have entries about Phelps’ food consumption. The eight gold medal hopeful is a regular patron of Pete’s Grill in Baltimore according to a MyFoxDC article, so perhaps he could enter that restaurant’s annual pancake eating contest.

The New York Times has a slideshow of Olympians which lists their daily calorie consumption:

  • Christian Cantwell, shotput, 335 lbs., 5000 calories
  • Deena Kastor, marathon, 103 lbs., 4000 calories
  • Cheryl Haworth, weightlifting, 300 lbs., 3000 – 4000 calories
  • Brett Newlin, rowing, 225 lbs., 6000 calories
  • Sarah Hammer, cycling, 135 lbs., 4500 calories

Rower Jamie Schroeder estimates he consumes 8,000 – 10,000 calories a day.

Volleyball player Stacy Sykora
has the highest daily calorie consumption I could find for a current female Olympian at 5,000, with a sizeable percentage of that coming from McDonald’s burgers.

Canadian rower Heather Clarke
might have set the all time record for female Olympians when she consumed 10,000 calories a day in preparing for the 1980 games.

His nutritionist is Michael Moore. Seriously, look at those food choices. Not an ounce of anything healthy and barely any veggies. However, I’m sure this must be his contest/heavy training eating regimen, just to get as much energy as possible. He couldn’t possibly live on this type of food selection in the off season. But reading this does make me want to get more active than I already am so I can eat even more than I already do and get away with it!

I think its bullshit that he ingests 12,000 calories a day and is able to easily burn it off and then some. Do you know how long it takes to burn off 12,00 calories? Like most of the day. Lets hear the real story from Mr Phelps himself

I think maybe the lesson to learn from massive calorie consumption is if we exercised more we could stop thinking about what we ate! When I am training for a marathon after running 20 miles or so, I am so hungry I can’t seem to eat enough. I think I will just have a big super sized burger, but my meat with be organic, some organic sweet potato fries, and a thick organic shake, I am sure I will feel awesome afterwards, maybe I will also need a sundae too.

Not a chance he’s eating 12 000 calories per day. He may have done it once or twice, but its just hype to keep people preoccupied so no one asks the real questions. 8 gold medals, day after day…..2 or 3 maybe….but 8?!??! its an amazing accomplishment but it doesn’t come from fried egg sandwiches.

Michael Phelps has alot in common with competitive eaters. Not only does he eat like them but he shares some of their mental issues . He was born with ADHD

The guy swims 5 hours a day. It’s very easy for me to believe that he eats that much. When my sons come back from swim practice they are voracious and thats only 1.5 hours of swimming.
