Joey Chestnut does the double & a half deuce !
from IFOCE.com Congratulations to Joey Chestnut who set an American record of 50 hot dogs at the Nathan’s qualifier in Las Vegas today. Chestnut’s performance is better than 2 of Kobayashi’s winning marks and equivalent to one. Rich LeFevre set a personal best of 30.5 and Ron Koch did 15.
Note: The IFOCE report says that the previous American record was 42 when it is actually 37 (set by Sonya Thomas last year.)

I told you guys months ago, this Joey Chestnut was not joke. I want to see some comments from The Real Deal and Rhonda…who have earlier tried to say he’d barely break 40. Hey Rich, what odds are you offering now? 50 1/2 HDBs and he’s still over 5 weeks out from the competition! The 4th of July is going to be incredible.

Joey, you are incredible. Our hope for the future of American eating. I predict that this year’s Nathan’s contest on July 4 is going to pull in the highest ratings ever.

Joey’s 50-Dog qualifier is mind-boggling. I honestly didn’t think he could keep that many down. Well he proved me wrong. Given the caliber of that performance, in a qualifier no less, it would not surprise me if Koby conveniently retires from Nathan’s. He brought it up a year or so ago, but didn’t follow through.
If Koby does show up, I expect it to take close to 60 Dogs and Buns to win, whether it be Joey or Koby. What the heck, if Joey did 50 just for practice, who knows, maybe he can do 60.
Where does that leave Sonya? Well, I think she would admit that 50 Dogs are probably too much for her, because she mentioned on her site that 40 + Dogs is her immediate goal. Sonya continues to improve every year (and in EVERY FOOD, no less) and I believe that within a year two she too will eat 50.
This Nathan’s contest will be the biggest, most publicized, most watched contest ever. ESPN must be salivating that they have secured the broadcast rights.
Also, this anticipated event will surely open doors for competitive eating to be recognized for the sport and the competition that it is. The potential growth for the sport, given Joey’s performance, should open some doors of opportunity for the sport that have been closed for so long. I know this may seem overly ambitious right now, but just you wait. You ain’t seen nothing yet. In 2 – 3 years the top eaters will be able to make a living from CE alone, as it should be.
Joey, congratulations! You have taken this sport to the next level!

Joey way to go on your first “Deuce Tre”. Can anyone say “Triple Deuce” or “Double Tre”?
Now that you are such a bigshot, maybe you can splurge and get you website up!

Wow, Joey! I knew you were great but I sure didn’t know you were THAT great. I have never been so off base on my odds and I humbly stand corrected. Good luck in bringing back the belt to the U.S. on July 4. I wish I could have watched the awe inspiring performance myself. At least I’m glad Carlene had a front row spot to witness it while I plodded along at a comparative snails’ pace.

Joey Chestnut has silenced his critics, in incredible fashion. With the gains that Chestnut has made in his eating, there is absolutely no reason why he isn’t bringing the mustard belt back to the states. This is quite possibly the greatest thing to happen to american sports. In america, while the other “major” sports are overshadowed by steroids, rape, and other contoversy, Chestnut is climbing the ranks up the last honest sport. Joey Chestnut is the greatest american athlete since Muhammad Ali. He is the light in a time filled with darkness. Chestnut is an american hero.

50! That’s a 35 percent increase over the previous American mark. He didn’t just break the record, he devoured it and went back for seconds and thirds!
