in the marines when the drill instructor thought that you were eating something in the barracks he would literly open tour mouth and put his hands in to make sure it empty. when i contest ends the judge should do as the d.rill instructor did and then either dq the eater or take off points..don lerman

You people voting for “Estimate” are boobs. Estimating will open up all kinds of problems. Same thing with the “Subtract” vote. The only no nonsense ways to go are either “Disqualification” or “No penalty”. The other ways are open to interpretations that won’t be similar from judge to judge. IFOCE should clarify the rule, and disqualify someone who breaks it. Simple.

“hands up, step away” — that should be a choice.

if you can get it into your mouth without using your hands, it would count
If it falls to the table it gets added into the uneaten total

That’s a tough one. I agree with Mama that allowing judges to estimate might create more havoc than if there were no rule at all. Maybe the penalty could be a deduction of one food item from the eater’s final total (one crabcake, one hot dog, etc). That could get tricky for foods that are measured in pounds (ice cream, shoo fly pie, etc). For those, the penalty amount would be set beforehand (four ounces?). That would pretty much eliminate outside the mouth chipmunking because no eater would want to be penalized.

Inside or outside the mouth, the whole chipmunking thing really does need to be addressed. In the seconds after a contest ends, I’ve heard spectators at these events saying to each other things like “Hey, he’s still got stuff in his mouth!” or “That’s doesn’t seem fair.” And when I say it needs to be addressed, I don’t mean it needs to be banned altogether. Addressing it could be as simple as the emcee discussing the legality of chipmunking within the sport before and during the contest.

Still, the practice seems to go against how most people view what it means to “eat” something. To the average spectator, the process involves more than just shoving something in your mouth. It also involves chewing and swallowing.

I like Joes interpretation. If you can close your lips then OK as long as you get it down.

They judges should suck out the food from the contestants mouth(mouth to mouth.

Regarding Joe’s much earlier comments, that’s why 1-minute contests are especially not fair, nor a reliable indicator of speed-eating ability. People with Big Mouths can cram lots of food in and need only swallow it later to be counted. People with little mouths can’t, and are essentially penalized for having a nonaberrant body part. In this regard smaller people have a handicap that they need to make up for throughout the duration of the contest, however long it is.

That’s why what little people do is especially impressive! Hell, big people SHOULD eat more food. And it’s most gratifying to see the little person win — not just to me, but to the vast majority of — the average — onlooker.

Mr Lerman the military especially the marines is an entirely different ballgame from competitive eating. The officer can literally beat the shit out of you an inch away from death and get away with it. They can get away with that because it is the “military” which is a world away from the world. I cannot fathom Charles Hardy grabbing an eaters teeth like grabbing a german shepard in an attempt to pry yhe food out of their mouth. The man was an officer at Rikers but i do not think he ever had to go through that extreme to get his point across. With that said i am not an expert and should not make a comparison to spending 4 yrs or more at Rikers as opposed to 4yrs in the Marines or special forces. Although you might find this hard to believe but there are a select few in the IFOCE that i think would let Hardy attempt to pry their mouth open and not do a damn think about it.
