Delurking with my first blog post here. I have been a long time all you can eat restaurant goer for about 35 years. Eating contests in Canada are rare. I put in my vote for Vancouver, BC, Canada to be a eating contest hotspot. In 1999 the IFOCE started the Canadian Hot Dog Eating Championship at Playland.
(http://www.pne.ca/playland/). I guess due no or limited publicity I and Chris Eyre did not know about it.In 2000 large public interest articles appearred in the Vancouver Sun newspaper about not being about to contact the 1999 winner to return to defend his title and also trying to get the Canadian Mustard Belt back. Due to this publicity the belt came back and I entered. In 2000 and 2001 I phoned to say I could eat a lot to get a spot. In 2002 and 2003 there were about 5 weekly 5 minutes qualifers each year. By winning them I am the proud owner of two golden arched weiners (which look like a phallus) with a smile standing proudly on a pedestal. In 2003 only the golden arched weiner was for the first time also given to the Champion. Sadly for the latter 4 years I consistantly was second to Chris Eyre. During those 4 years Rich Shea was the MC, Nathan’s weiners were flown in and local buns used. In 2003 Ray “The Bison” Meduna came from Seattle to guest judge. After 2003 Playland cancelled the Championship due to bad publicity with the winner Chris Eyre of Surrey and his alleged bad judgement (photos online at that time) in New York City on the morning of July 4, 2003. I was hoping for a revival so I could get a chance to go to Coney Island. I wonder where the Canadian Mustard Belt and display case are now. [While Chris was dealing with the state of NY I did win the 2003
Canada Cup (Women’s Fast Pitch) Hot Dog eating contest (second one, I did not know about the 2002 one) in Surrey, BC just after the Nathan’s contest. I was surprised to win the same golden arched weiner, $500 Cdn, 24 lbs of weiners and a Fleetwood Sausage jacket. The organizers used the same maker but did not know Playland had previosly used the same mould. The contest was discontinued.]
It looks like this year Playland has a non-IFOCE replacement. Nando’s (http://www.nandoscanada.com/ ) held the first annual Chicken Chow Down For Children at Playland on Saturday July 22, 2006. Grand Prize was a meal a week for 52 weeks. I was not aware of it until I saw a segment about the contest on the Monday July 24, 2006 edition of the Urban Rush show on the Shaw Cable 4 Community Channel in Vancouver. The winner Chris said he ate just over 1 kilogram/2.2 pounds of chicken in 20 minutes. There were 11 contestants. A segment was shown. In my humble opinion they sure ate slow. On Sunday, April 23rd, 2006 I ate that amount of 3 inches high burgers in 5 minutes for charity at the 1st Annual BURGERS ETC burger eating contest
(http://www.burgers-etc.com/index_files/Page552.html) in Burnaby, BC.

Hey Ken,
With all your talk about the ‘incident’, maybe you should go back to lurking.
Eyre was one of the people I would look forward to seeing, which probably clouded my judgement in a conversation with George Shea, that was partly responsible for my leaving the “feds”.
Its kinda funny how I get occasional requests on how to get a hold of the Canadian Hot Dog Champ… Its always Eyre, not you!
This posting may seem more derogatory than I mean it to be, but why would you bring that up?!?! To make you look better is the only thing I can think of. I’m sure Chris has paid for what occured, & I bet the two of them are still together.
Here’s something I bet me & George Shea will agree on… oj, please pull any commentary regarding the incident, including this one.

Some corrections to the
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan's_Hot_Dog_Eating_Contest
entry should be made. Countries listed outside the US that have hosted or plan to host qualifiers are
England, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and Thailand. There are entries for
“Contestants and qualifier contestants with missing information…Kevin Lamb (Vancouver, BC)…David Tasie (Vancouver, BC) (1999)”
I do not know if David was the 1999 Canadian Hot Dog Eating Championship. I can supply the information for 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
There is no mention of the Canadian mustard-yellow belt. I am not aware of any other country having such a belt.
