“A-Bomb” blows up the WLOCE contract

Andrew Lane, now going by “A-Bomb” instead of “Skinnyboy” has a blog entry about the agreement competitors are required to sign before participating in the upcoming WLOCE Boulder cupcake eating contest. The agreement requires signees to pay 20% of their (non-contest competitive eating updated) earnings back to WLOCE, indemnification for Shea Communications (?) and a restriction on participating in non-WLOCE sanctioned events.

I now have to be anonymous because i was told to be anonymous!
My “boss” wont let me use my name anymore unless its at my affiliated website.

Signing this wloce waiver doesnt really count since wloce is a joke.
You can sign this waiver and do an ifoce event the next day or an aice event the next day but you have to remain anonymous.
Because wloce dont count, unless your dale boone and you suck so bad that you have to get 20% of Menchettis first place prize money back because you charged the poor hindu people 75,000,000 rupees to do a fake event.

Boone, you have not checked the exchange rate lately huh.

In no way am I defending Boone, it does look like a cut/paste job that he missed one or two segments of from the ifoce. & I won’t sign that, just as I wouldn’t sign the ifoce’s versions.

The 20% is NOT for contests. Its an ‘agent fee’ for getting other opportunities. Such as a paid appearence on Leno or a tv show or movie.

That was one of the few things I didn’t have a complaint w/regarding the ifoce. If they get me a paid appearence, for something I wouldn’t have had anyway, i’m fine w/that.

Not that i’m going to the contest in India, but why would it be fake?!

Like I have said a few times before (but not lately), before signing any contract, including those of the IFOCE and WLOCE, eaters should read it carefully and think things through. Remember, it’s for 2 years.

I used to argue against the logic —- still do —- that you shouldn’t sign an IFOCE contract, simply because it’s a contract. If you agree to the terms, sign, if not, don’t. It’s that simple —- no need to throw stones at those who do sign.

The IFOCE (and WLOCE?) is a business. A contract makes that business seem more official, more legitimate. Frankly, if I were an eater, I’d feel more comfortable with a contract if it seemed fair. That’s key, however; fairness means different things to different people.

Contracts can be altered. To be successful, you gotta play the system.

I’m going to side somewhat with Dale on this issue, although it’s weird that he left “Shea Communications” in the contract. Personally, I don’t see the harm in ripping off the IFOCEMLE contract. It’s all a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo and formalities anyhow, so who really cares.

The sharing 20 percent of the winnings thing is interesting though, but you have to admit, it’s kind of a smart idea on his part. Make a little money on the backs of your eaters. Sounds like a familiar strategy, no? (For the record, I’m not saying contest organizers and promoters like Shea/Boone shouldn’t make money for what they do…they absolutely should.)

I guess Prez Boone is entitled to some sort of compensation for working to set up these contests. If not for him working to arrange the contests and lobbying for prize money, WLOCE eaters wouldn’t have the opportunity to earn winnings. The Shea’s get compensated too, they just shave some off the top…and probably more than 20 percent of the winnings.
