A tower at Nathan’s Coney Island site?

The New York Daily News has an article about redevelopment plans for Coney Island:

Buried deep in the plans is a provision that says of the 50 blocks being rezoned in Coney Island, only the block that contains Nathan’s – at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Aves. – and one block immediately west would be rezoned for towers.

That means the two-story building, which has drawn millions of hot dog lovers since 1916, could expand to 14 stories – or more – when detailed plans are approved next year.

“Nathan’s would be given more opportunities for development on its property, which could lead to any one of a number of scenarios, including the expansion of Nathan’s or its redevelopment as a new building,” City Planning spokeswoman Rachaele Raynoff confirmed.

Curbed suggests that Nathan’s redevelopment plans include a competitive eating venue.

rumor that certain faces and names will be removed from the wall of fame such as kid cary, don lerman and one or two more to make room for other eaters. I hope this doesnt occur. Its all about downsizing and politics

I hope that this is just a rumor with no substance . I toured for Nathans entering every contest in 2001 when it was more or less just a local event turning it into what it is today , I made tne natnans contest what it is today with such films as gutbusters and the big eats , if they change the whole wall I can accept and understand their decion , but to remove me unilateraly . willbe forced to bring legal action to keep it on …don lerman

Don Moses Lerman that would be the ultimate spit in the face to you for all you have done for competitive eating. I will personally lobby to block that removal . If we have to conduct a non violent march through the streets of Coney Island and city hall it will take place. So it shall be written So it shall be done

That Wall of Fame needs to be kept as is. Put the new faces on another wall/monument, but don’t screw with the legends.

DONMOSESLERMAN is the greatest competitive eater of all time and not only should they refrain from removing his likeness from the wall, they need to erect another monument dedicated solely to his greatness on his own merit. No other eater on God’s green earth deserves to even look upon Moses robe!!!
