Makes sense to me. It is definitely in line with Bloomberg’s mission. The writer is extremely well respected and experienced in filmmaking and directing. He even offers a kind of out for Bloomberg to quietly ignore the contest. Yet honestly, what is more July 4th than cookouts and hotdogs and the trimming and going out with the family to a Coney Island. It would be very easy for Bloomberg to skip the weigh-in or be unavailable. But think about this. Nathans is very big business in NYC. The weigh-in is only one of the many events leading up to the contest. It doesn’t really have to happen and wouldn’t take much away from the whole. It is just PR plain and simple. They could do something different. Could be a win-win.

Curious as to what type of lifespan some of these eaters on stage will have as years roll on. Thousands of grams of sodium and nitrates injested. does wonders for the heart

For most eaters it will not make any difference as long as they are taking care of themselves outside of competitive eating. You can easily tell who they are. What they do is no different from people who do take good care of themselves away from any table. Joey is another story completely.
