Asterisk for waffle record?
The waffle record set yesterday is somewhat analagous to Roger Maris’ home run record which required 162 games to break a record set by Babe Ruth in 154 games. The 2005 contest was 10 minutes and the 2006 contest was 12 minutes, and it took longer than 10 minutes (10:23) to break the previous record. Unlike Roger Maris, Joey Chestnut should not have to worry about receiving death threats from fans of the previous record holder.
Updated 9/5 3:57 pm – This myspace blog entry by a contest spectator, which came out before the IFOCE results, says the contest was ten minutes, so that is almost certainly the contest duration. I am curious where the 10:23 value came from.
Updated 9:34 pm – The UPI article about the contest also says the duration wat ten minutes

For the record to my knowledge it wasnt Maris that got the death threats it was Hank Aaron that recieved the threats when he got close to breaking Ruth’s career homerun record of 714 because he was black

Does anyone know why they went with a 12 minute contest this year instead of 10? Why muddle with the record books by adding the extra 2 minutes? Weird.

The IFOCE postings were deficient on several counts yesterday. I believe the contest WAS 10 minutes, not 12.
And Chip, while he did an absolutely incredible job with 158 Wings Saturday, did not set a new record. Sonya still has the record.
Her record is162 (5.09 lbs X 16 OZ = 81.44 OZ / .5 OZ {for each wing} = 162.88). So Sonya’s Web site is correct. The IFOCE Web site stating 161 is off by 1 Wing. They must have a defective calculator.
