Juliet Lee by a landslide. With a chaperone or two. She will win and give interviews in her native tongue. Brilliant, publicity in China in one package.

They’re looking for another Koby is what they’re doing. I understand he’s Japanese, not Chinese but I could see this as an attempt to find another awesome foreign eater.

How is it a setup for Crazy Legs when Patrick Bertoletti will be competing?

Actually from a political standpoint it’s kind of interesting. Anybody the Chinese put up is going to have to be approved by the party and needs party approval to travel out of the country. Therefore I don’t think the Chinese will put up to many slouches and it could be a pretty good eater, possibly someone from their armed forces. Now if you send someone like Legs, or maybe even Juliet (both admittedly are not the best at hotdogs) you run the chance that your MLE eater could get beat. But, I don’t think that would be embarrassment for the MLE, and it would be good set up press story for July 4. But if a top-10 MLE eater actually does gets beat, that would be a big embarrassment for the eater. I mean it’s our food, it’s our contest, and you got beat. Ouch. That’s why it might make sense to send a ringer like Bertoletti or Janus and the Chinese would be hard pressed to find some eater who could beat him. A lot of interesting angles in this story.

That makes sense that the MLE won’t pay for the eater. That way if the Chinese guy beats some MLE eater, none of their top money makers lose face and they don’t lose a dime. The MLE could play up the Chinese winner with the media as a showdown against Joey on the Fourth (unknown Chinese person beats MLE eater for credibility, could this unknown eater actually take the Mustard Belt away from the Free World, etc.). Kind of a Kobi v. Joey redux, but this time USA v. Peoples Republic of China (PRC) on our nation’s independence day. Pretty smart cookies those Shea boys.

Just wait and see! This is going to be an unexpected surprise for you all when the China qualifier contestants are announced. I am laughing my ass off because I know something you don’t know. Some eaters are going to be VERY PISSED OFF.

If Sonya Thomas is one of the contestants, you dont honestly believe that the trip to China will be an out of pocket expense for her now do you?

Maybe who ever gets to go can stick around and see some lingchi. That’s what the Chinese are very good at doing.. Just saying. lol

Why are you trying to start shit? Nothing better to do at 2:01 AM? Try sleeping!

Anyway, yes I absolutely know that it would.

Maybe once upon a time when Sonya was # 1 in the US of A she might have had a trip here and there paid for—-if it would be cost-effective for the IFOCE. But when you fall out of the # 1 slot you fall out of grace with them, per their business model.

I suspect that about the only contest that Sonya might have airfare paid for anymore is perhaps Buffalo, if even that.

There is NO WAY the IFOCE will fly any eater to China free, unless it’s Joey.

Rhonda, whoever she is, is absolutely correct, 100%. Whoever is going is paying their way unless it’s Joey.

Well if you have the bread then more power to you. The going rate to China as we speak ia around $1500 rd trip per person. Anyone stupid enough to pluck down those kind of dollars to eat hotdogs needs to have their head examined

  21. Anonymous said

There are a few who will pluck down that money just to buy a spot into the Nathans finals again. It’s the perfect scenario, just wait and see. hahahaha

Is this what its come down to buying a spot into the finals and costing $1500 yet? They should charge Gavonne the same price for admission to the bullpen after party for fries and hot dogs which is normally free for family and friends

Travel expenses for the winner to compete in Coney Island on July 4th will be provided only if the winner eats 10 hot dogs and buns or more.

You can get a ticket to China for $900 with hotel. Two hotdog qualifiers flying works out the same.

yeah i saw this as well. however, highly unlikely to even see a 2nd place finisher in these contests with less than 10. maybe back in the 1970’s. although when i read it, i interpreted that a winner less than 10 full hdb’s would not qualify at all.

Is there a separate registration process for Chinese citizen’s, other than via MLE online?

Stephanie, in the People’s Republic of China you need approval to do anything involving foriegn nationals such as the MLE, especially if it could involve travel out of the country. Internet access is also limited. Hong Kong is liberalized, but Bejing is more controlled and still under fairly strict party rule. So, if a Chinese eater wants to participate, they will have to first go through their local party leader/official. Then if it is okayed, they would probably be permitted access to the internet to enter the contest.
