Buffalo Jim coaches corn competitor
A columnist for the Buffalo news competed in a corn contest after receiving advice from “Buffalo” Jim Reeves:
Reeves’ eyes gleamed as I told him of my intention. He said he wished I’d come to him sooner so we could have devised a workout schedule. I told him that would have been way deeper than I wanted to go. A few tips from an expert is all I was after, advice on how to avoid the mistakes that engulf most newcomers to the sport.
Reeves clued me in. He said the allotted three minutes would seem like an eternity once the contest began. He urged me swallow after each trip across the cob because an overloaded mouth will result in fatigued jaw muscles and compromise my intake. If I relaxed and enjoyed myself he assured me last year’s winning total — six ears — would be well within reach. And once the contest began, once the competitive juices began flowing, I forgot every word he’d said.
