Chestnut vs. Kobayashi on Netflix in September

Netflix announced that Joey Chestnut will face off against Takeru Kobayashi in “Unfinished Beef”, a matchup that will be streamed on Labor Day, September 2. The competition will use beef frankfurters. Hollywood Reporter has an article about the program with the following quote from Takeru Kobayashi:

Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time. This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out.

flashback July 2022 In an interview on the Pardon My Take podcast, Joey Chestnut expressed a desire to compete against Takeru Kobayashi.

Holy crap! They are both the coolest for agreeing to this. I always figured it was all just talk. I still watch MLE, but they really missed out here.
Ultimately this is what that lousy contract got them. lol!!!

I guess Kobayashi is still a bit “hungry” after all, contrary to what he was claiming a few weeks ago…

I don’t think he stands a chance against Joey. It would be the upset of the century if he beats Chesnut on Sept 2.

First you say you are retired , now you are eating again . What is this , pro wrestling?
To people in the know , this was the biggest kept secret in the room .
Competitive Eating NEEDS This . Kobiyashi and Chestnutt are brands . Brands sell . Chestnutt will destroy Kobi , but something might happen to set up a rematch ..

It doesn’t help that the handful of fans who do keep up with their events aren’t always guaranteed to be able to see the contests live.
They do not stream them, and the streams that do happen have had about a 75% failure rate lately.
The money is definitely in the promotion with the sponsors – not the spectator side of things.

Lol at the sheas. Greedy to the core. They don’t do much for the eaters and try to eat into their profits when they find outside eating revenue. Glad Joey and Kobi are doing this match up and hopefully getting paid $$$ mucho guap!

Time for a hotdog company to step up. We want an American owned brand plus Nathan’s is getting old and now not an American company

Any chance there will be adjustments to the MLE contract or maybe a lot of eaters won’t renew. Does MLE fund the prize purse or is it all sponsors ? Seems that only a few eaters are on the MLE payroll if prize fund is setup from the sponsors

Watching Joey destroy everyone for 15 years has gotten stale…I’m certain allof this is part of a larger plan to get it in the news from a different angle.
banning Joey – now someone else can get some shine.
the 1v1 contest – give the people what they want.

    everyone wins

I’d guess they were offered 250k each win or lose. Again just my opinion not fact as I know nothing. A fine offer indeed for the two very best hot dog eaters.

Chestnut got $200,000 just to participate in Nathans plus lots of other money. MLE was even ready to match his offer from Impossible Foods as long as he did not represent their hotdogs. Joey wins again.

Or… (and hear me out), July 4th will become the “Superbowl” of food brand advertising. You could see a large number of food brands competing to be the headline sponsor for a different Independence Day eating contest (in the doomsday scenario that Nathan’s contest goes away).

Something like the “Digiorno July 4th Pizza Eating Contest”. Or “Kelloggs Independance Day Pop Tart Eating Contest”. Even fast food might get involved: Smashburger contest, anyone? In-N-Out triple triple eating champonship?

These are all unlikely scenarios, but I can dream, right?

MLE for all of its faults is here to stay. Nathans 4th will continue as long as Nathans wishes it to, and it does. They will spring back from the Joey and Kobayashi eras. Actually, they should both retire for health reasons. There are new eaters coming up. It will be far more interesting to watch a Nathans contest.

MLE is very weak and it wouldn’t take much to start a pro league not one manipulated by Nathan’s and China owners. There are plenty of ex competitive eaters that could achieve this. Very simple and could propel eaters MLE doesn’t care about you.

If it were so simple someone would have already done. Two flopped tries.

if there is one guy i wish would disappear is that Sam Barkley Everthing about him is annoying The guy is a company man to the hilt It would be all worthwhile if he is out of a job

@6:27PM – Sam Barclay is literally the nicest guy and the biggest legend. I don’t believe he is employed by MLE anymore, just contracts in for Emcee spots I am pretty sure.

I for one certainly rejoice when I see Sam is Emceeing.

sounds like a big Aussie circle-jerk to me… you “rejoice”? really?

Sam’s very good at what he does, but so is George. There’s plenty of entertainers / MCs that could fill Sam’s void if he ever decided to not do the MLE contests anymore. I have no issue with him, but I could see how some pppl might not like his style of entertaining.

Sam is a good hype man and as 845a said he is good at his job. George is ok but he spends too much time on the intro’s and has gotten some of the stats incorrectly when referring to the wing eating champion of the world , the green pea eating champion of the world, the name discipline eating champion of the world. It seems like some of these titles are there for one competition and then consistently referenced or as another commentor said inflated. Do the records only exist if MLE hosts the event ?

MLE records are only for events that were sanctioned by MLE. Marcos Owens hold the MLE cannoli record of 34 (2014) at the Feast of San Gennaro but Wayne Algenio has the contest record of 38 (2019) after the competition dropped MLE sanctioning.

As far as barkllay is concerned he can be real arrogant if you go back and forth with emails if you have an issue with a sponsor just talking from experience
