The Philadelphia City Paper has an interview with Bill “El Wingador” Simmons who will attend Monday’s screening of the Wing Bowl documentary “Swallow Your Pride” at National Mechanics in Philadelphia. Simmons believes he should have defeated Sonya Thomas in the 2004 Wing Bowl.

    Wingador really never beat Sonya. Any rational person knows She won the first time and was cheated the second. He’s just not that great of an eater. Just look at Sonya’s total’s compared to Wingador’s in other contests — take Nathan’s for example.

    Many questions need to be answered. Do the sheas know that there voices are heard in the movie ? Are they aware that some IFOCE members images appear in the movie? I can now understand why Bob Shoudt is treated like shit by the IFOCE and why he was temporarily suspended from the organization. He is in most of the movie

    El Wingador’s a heck of an eater when it comes to Wing Bowl. But not only did he not defeat Sonya in 2004, he didn’t get past Cookie.

    Look what happened to him later in the Philly qualifier when Sonya topped him easily with only 26 (I think) HDBs. Then look at his performance in a Krystals qualifier later that year. I still recall GJoe’s comments on Speedeat.com calling for Wingador’s retirement from CE after that outing.

    El Wingador had a wonderful opportunity to put his wing-eating prowess on display, in the Buffalo Wingfest Labor Day WE, 2004, but he elected not to.

    Why? Because he would have swallowed more pride than Buffalo wings. I think 2004 will go down as the year Bill abruptly learned his CE limitations.

    But, he’s still a formidable force in Wing Bowl, and the Philly favorite.

    I agree Don, and had you granted permission, you should have been given credit for them.

    But once a pic goes into cyberspace, it becomes open season, and it’s difficult, if not impossible—-certainly not cost-effective—-to win a legal battle over IP rights.

    El Wingador is one of the greatest competitive eaters of all time. No one in the film is close to him in ability and talent. He is the face of competitive eating.

    Don’t belittle my accomplishments. i was a 6 time finalist in Nathans, i toured and won 7 out of 10 contest of Nathansin 2001, I came in2 ND and 3rd in the Philly wing bowl, should have gotten 1st , Poor judging wings weren’t weighed. I consider myself one of the greatest eater ever to walk the Earth and all the eaters in their heart of hearts know that to be true

No Did you ever beat hardy for a title? no did you ever beat booker for a title ? No. did you ever beat sonya for a title ? no so who did you beat russel machover.

    DeVito, Seiken, Lerman, Hardy, Lipsitz, Jarvis, Kratchie, Meduna, and Booker should get immediate nominations, followed by CrazyLegs, Wingador, O’Karma, and Chapman, and DeVito. After those greats are in the others might qualify on a case by case basis. I think the great Brian Seiken should be the first one in. Perhaps they should erect side by side statues of him and the great Don Moses Lerman at the entrance of the Hall of Fame to set the mood.

    I realty don’t expect to be Lerman to make it in the hall of fame most likely influence and pressure will bear to keep him out . , strings will be pulled and we wont see him in , lesser eaters will be nominated and confirmed.

    In a recent government study Georgia & Missisippi have the largest obesity rates in the nation, 32& 25percent respectively. It makes sense to house the eaters hall of fame in one of those states

    I think it was a very nice thing to do, for Wingador to politely allow sonya to get credit for winning her first wing bowl. Until that time sonya hadnt won hardly anything and Wingador was the wing bowl king. He really is such a great champion and it showed that year. What a wonderful person. Sonya must feel like she owes him a lot.

    ANON 12:17: Sonya’s laughing her ass off. Good one! Yeah el wingo is the best eater ever. Sonya’s front page top of the fold (Philly Inquier) as she was when kicked el wingo’s butt. The only front page el wingo can make is the business section under failed businesses. Hey, el wingo you want to show Sonya, just show up to the next eating contest she’s in. Eat up or shut up.     Politley allow her to win? He cant even eat 16 hot dogs and buns. I think it is the other way around Sonya should give wingador a 2 or 3 lb advantage before a contest in any food of his choice and she would still kick his ass . Before the chestnut era asian eaters never lost to americans.
