I would enter, but i don’t feel like wasting my $40 entry fee against eating greats like Matt and Johnnie! But I might come to shoot video and take pics. Depends on my schedule.

Entry fees for eating contests is such a lame concept.

While i’m not in love w/entry fees, it does keep the riff raff, looking for a free meal out. (more entries for those that have a chance)

Also, I think i’d say its more difficult hanging by your computer at a specified time, hoping to get in to a contest you won’t win anyway, paying for your own airfare, hotel & other expenses.

Well said, Joe. This is especially frustrating when the top eaters can decide to sign up at any time, before or after the actual sign up time, and take spots away from people who legitimately sign up. Usually the reason people get wait-listed, and then, suddenly, there’s a spot open just days before the contest.

Joe makes an excellent point. The same riff raff that wanted in on the dumpling contest looking for a free meal would be restricted to the sidelines if all eating contests charged a fee for competing in NYC

Good point about self-selection and about being in control, making one’s own decisions. The sponsors may be defraying their own costs or doing something for charity, that is their decision as is the decision to “pay to play” for the eaters. GJoe is a voice of reason.

Free meal? What free meal! Usually after a 10-12 minute eating contest I am still hungry! 🙂

In all seriousnness, maybe if they had prizes for second and third place, so other lesser people like me had a chance, I might enter, but $40 is kind of steep I think.

The $40 entry fee will either keep people out, or restrict competition to the serious (or those with $40 to waste)

I paid a $35 entry fee for a $300 1st place payout last weekend. This is a way better payout for $5 more dollars, but when i competed last weekend i knew i was getting paid up to fifth place. Win or loose, i’ll do it for the competition.

ken’s got his head on straight, all this i think shouldn’t be strictly bout the money but also alot for the fun of competiton (money is always nice tho), so for those who can afford it a $40 entrance fee shouldnt be the decider on weather or not you should go, you gotta have fun and for those who just go for the money i think are way to serious.
