I know that lots of people can go to restaurants and eat what looks, to mere mortals, like super human amounts of food.  And do it super fast.

But being able to eat a giant sandwich in the perfect conditions of a restaurant that is close to home is a hell of a lot different than showing up someplace away from home and having to deal with all sorts of variables you always find in contests.  Weather.  Unedible food.  Uneven judging.  To say nothing of the mental challenge in knowing and remembering that the true competition is not the others at the table but the food.  The list of distractions goes on and on.

And I know that more than one of these local-legends-in-their-own-mind have spit up when facing real competition.   But I think this Minnesota kid Eric “the Silo” Dahl just might be the real deal.

He is big.  He is strong.  And he is hungry.

I don’t know how good he is or how good he can be because he surely has not been tested for class, but from viewing him in person and watching him on line I think he has a good chance to become the best Minnesota eater ever.

And that would mean that he would be a better eater than the late Patrick Vandam, who was only with us for such a short time, but who is one of the only eaters to ever eat 30 HDB’s in two different Nathan’s qualifiers in the same year and who earned a trip to the big show in 2008 by going to Chicago and eating 31 HDB’s to beat Gravy Brown on his home turf.

Hopefully some serious eaters come in from out of town to go for the $700 first prize in this 12 minute marathon.  That might give us an idea of how good he is.

But if they come, they had best be hungry.  I’m sure The Silo will be.
