Erik Denmark’s revised asparagus amounts

Erik Denmark has a blog entry about his participation in last Saturday’s asparagus eating contest in Stockton, California which contains what he believes are more accurate totals for the top four finishers:

1 – Joey Jaws Chestnut (1) – 8.25 lbs. (reported as 8.8), $1500
2 – Pat Deep Dish Bertoletti (2) – 8.125 lbs. (reported as 7.14) , $750
3 – Erik the Red Denmark (12) – 4.875 lbs. (reported as 4.75), $500
4 – Juris Dr Big Time Shibayama (17) – 4.625 lbs. (reported as 4.5)

(As noted in a previous post, Pat’s counter displayed 8 when the contest was over)

Erik also has a photo gallery of the contest.

So Mr. Chestnut’s total goes down, and everyone else goes up? …. According to Mr. Denmark. Who’s he think he is?

I think Eric could actually be more acurate. Even though a scale doesn’t change, we all know how the totals change three times before the final report. Why would that be? Because they don’t have their act together at the contest. The only thing I don’t know here is, were there any deductions in anyone’s total for any reason?

Actually, Erik was THERE. I think he’d know the truth. Were either of you there?

No, I wasn’t there. Nor were you. Why are you so eager to drink the Kool-Aid?

    The original difference was 8.8 – 4.75 = 4.05 lbs
    The new manipulated is 8.25 – 4.875 = 3.375 lbs

I think Mr. Denmark couldn’t accept being outeaten by 4+ lbs.
So, he manipulated the numbers to make it appear that his ass was merely tapped and not beaten.

All you cry babies with your “weigh my shit” belly-aching…. then it’s “oh wait, my weight’s not right. I ate more than that.”

NO, YOU DIDN’T!! You’re not as good as you think you are.

Did anyone hear Hall Hunt bitching? He got the shaft, but he took it like a man and moved on.

Now you know why Seiken included the track “weigh my shit” on his cd. They should make that song the national anthem before every eating contest

Love those “make my prediction perfect” revised totals! And rumor has it that Hall I Got Hoovered Hunt asked his direct upstairs connection to make lightning strike the cob counters in their shafts….

I have to think long and hard to come up with but a single (IFOCE) contest where the final totals were NOT questioned by at least a couple of eaters. That’s okay, but there’s a right/professional way to do it and a wrong way.

Dissenting on a public site for all to see is not the right way, and while it may get IFOCE attention, it also breeds intraorganizational contempt and it undermines camaraderie.

Take it up in private with the IFOCE. I don’t see them slamming any individuals on their Web site. Respect goes both ways.

I disagree with bickering hurting the IFOCE. In every sport there is controversy over calls make by officials. It frustrates the fans of a team/eater, but it makes for interesting conversation. With out controversy all we can talk about is wow that person ate a ton. Its the speculation and Monday morning quarterbacking that makes sports interesting. There are several media outlets dedicated to this kind of thing. Damaging Doug is a favorite of WIP, because of his open badmouthing of the wing bowl officials.

The above comment makes sense but nothing will ever come out of it . It’s water cooler talk and nothing more. The websites that do nothing but praise the eaters sounding almost like an artificial cartoon are downright boring EX: Juliet lee .com and Sonyablackwidow.com. This is not a knock on either individual because both are fine ladies and feel comfortable not making waves on the net . Letting off steam or bad gas with your keypad is much more satisfying then gritting your teeth and forcing yourself to type something you really dont believe in.

I know I’m a dummy, that’s a given, but I cannot help but to notice a fairly strong inverse correlation between the number of complaints eaters have and their placements in the rankings. Simply put, overall, higher ranked eaters (it seems to me) complain less. It also seems to me that several of these higher ranked eaters now, who used to be in the lower portion of the top 50, did not post negative comments even when they were ranked much lower.

Maybe by spending less time complaining they have more time to devote to constructively bettering their lot in life, to include competitive eating. You think?

I know this is a totally stupid thought, and I’m probably out in left field. Like I said, I’m a dummy, and maybe several of you can set me straight on this totally ridiculous and flawed perception. Help me out guys.

Rhonda i think that is no brainer correct? If someone is being taken care of or being fed with a silver spoon its obvious that there is no need for them to make waves. Anyone that is getting shafted in this organization or anywhere in life and keeps a positive attitude and a clear head is obviously not all there. How many times does someone have to hit you over the head with a hammer before you stop saying “Its all cool”

The only no brainer is Juliet has the best site on the net and it is visited by more dignitaries and whose who in America than any other cometitive eating web site in the world. She’s going to eat 50 hot dogs just in the qualifying round alone. You better pray she doesnt do gyros. She’ll do 80 minimum.

Rhonda, this thread started because of Erik’s post on his blog, where he wasn’t complaining per se, rather, just posting his own opinion of what the real totals were. He wasn’t saying this wasn’t fair, or so and so got cheated. He just updated his blog after the contest, and included his version of what happened. I know your last post may not be completely addressed to him, but if it was, read the blog again to see if it is true.

Rhonda, I do agree it is not in good taste to always be criticizing an organization that you support whole heartedly. That is why I do not do that. If you actually read the details of my posts I hope you can see that. There is no underlying dissent laced in any of my comments; my intent is merely to entertain and inform while providing my perspectives on eating. I have found that it can be hard to do that honestly and not be misinterpreted sometimes by reactionary individuals (I would not have thought to include you in that group Rhonda). But it is worth the risk to me because I think it is important to have a voice away from the table in CE and I enjoy it.

I also know that discerning individuals involved in Major League Eating that have a say in how they promote their organization are diligent enough to not get caught up in the ridiculous banter that often ensues on this site.

Erik, I am wondering, however, why the IFOCE’s listed totals have not been changed to reflect your “more accurate” numbers. Had I been in your shoes, and disagreed as you do, I would have gotten with the judge(s) off-line, so to speak, as soon as possible, while things are still fresh, to ask them to re-check their numbers.

But by doing what you did, and waiting as long as you did in posting your results, you put them in an embarrassing position, and make it look as if they have lost control. And perhaps that is your intention. I don’t know you, so I cannot accurately comment on that.

I’d say you are the one who’s more emotionally-charged about this. Your actions speak to that. I have absolutely no vested interest in the matter, as you do. As such, I am perhaps able to offer unbiased insight. Sorry if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Don’t people want to know what the real numbers are in a contest? Why shouldn’t someone point out discrepancies in totals if he or she knows what they should have been? Erik is like a lot of competitive eaters who want results to be accurate and not full of errors. The IFOCE officials should make sure results have been properly reported before they announce the placings as local helpers do not always give them the right information. It wouldn’t take long to verify each eater’s correct amount eaten and it would make the event far more credible.

Erik’s a tough mental competitor that is hard on himself to be the best. I’ve noticed he doesnt waste a lot of words and is pretty direct. I doubt he’d ever inflate his numbers for the sake of looking better to the rest of us.

There is a correct time and place to challenge the totals and this website is neither. I really wish these questions would have come up before the results were announced, posted and essentially finalized.

I am going to have to agree with the totals posted on the MLE site… Because I am not one to rock the boat ; )

The bottom line is, the numbers and records are what competitive eating is based on. If they’re not accurate — and if no one cares if they’re accurate — then the sport is a farce.
