Gal Sone defeats Shirota in Wednesday morning contest
ntv.com reports that Natsuko “Gal” Sone defeated Nobuyuki “The Giant” Shirota in bunless hamburgers, 22 plates to 20. This is Gal Sone’s first victory against Shirota in her weekly Wednesday morning contest since early 2006.

First I was shocked; then, as I thought about it, I believe there are three possibilities here:
1) Gal Sone is a TREMENDOUS distance eater who has legitimately knocked off one of the world’s absolute best gurgitators of all time, OR
2) While Gal Sone is still a tremendous distance eater with enormous stomach capacity, “The Giant” is merely a shell of his former self, CE-wise, OR
3) The event outcome was staged to enhance Gal Sone’s marketability in Japan.
As for me, I primarily subscribe to option # 3, but I still give Gal Sone credit for her accomplishment. Twenty-two plates is 22 plates. But, again, what was the time?
Having said that, since she seems as great as she does, maybe there is a chance she will attempt to qualify as Japan’s representative for Nathan’s in 2007. I don’t believe she will. Because if she gets taken out by too many American eaters — especially another female — then her notoriety in Japan, at least as a competitive eater, would suffer a moderate to severe blow.

She doesn’t really seem like she’s interested in speed eating so much, but rather eating large quantities. Which is fine, but it means she’d probably do awful in a 12 minute contest.

Don’t get me wrong, regarding what I’m about to say. I really like and respect Natsuko. She is nothing short of amazing and seems like a very, very sweet person.
But I would pay good money simply to watch her compete against Sonya at The Gal’s own game–a contest of however long she (The Gal) would like to dictate. I’m “hungry” to see that, and once I did experience it I would likely be a glutton to see more contests like it–1, 2, 3, 4 hours, whatever.
