Giant NJ deli sandwich in NY Times

28turn03.jpg

(From Save The Deli) The New York Times has an article and slideshow about restaurants near the exits of the New Jersey Turnpike. Harold’s New York Deli in Edison, NJ was visited near exit 10:

Harold Jaffee cut his teeth as general manager at the Carnegie Deli in Manhattan, where the sandwiches are big enough. But there’s something about New Jersey that made him want to do things bigger.

At Harold’s New York Deli, in a Holiday Inn just a kreplach’s toss from Exit 10, Mr. Jaffee serves a 26-ounce pastrami sandwich, two little triangles of bread teetering like a farce atop twin peaks of meat. The house-cured pastrami is soft, warm and mildly spiced. You can feed a carload on it, supplemented by slices of rye and half sours from the “world’s largest pickle bar.”

The 26 ounce sandwich is not the largest item on the menu; triple decker sandwiches are available.

I was here about a month ago. The food is unbelieveable and the qty is ridiculous. They have a pickle bar featuring dills, half dills, spicy, & Tomatos and all the Rye bread you can eat.

I was with a group of 12 and we ordered 3 monster sandwiches, which was about 1.5 sandwiches too many. Feeling painfully full with a pile of Pastrami left on my plate, I felt strangely at home. If I can get the photos from my brother I’ll post them.

The sandwich is cheaper in NY. Just ask RICH and CARLENE and me RON who went to the Carnegy deli and built our own sandwich with four different meats for less money..also if you were able to eat two ,one was free..I was at least 4.5 to 5lbs of meat not counting the bread the slaw and fries..We thr both finished it

Harolds has a 6lb sandwich of pastrami or corned beef for somewhere around $40 . Krazy Kevin told me about the place but i have yet to go there. At first i thought the price was a ripoff but when you figure that deli meat is over $25 a pound if you buy it a a jewish deli the $40 for a 6lb sandwich comes to less than $7 a pound . No big prize if you finish the sandwich. I thinka free desert but its not an easy task from what i have been told. Carnegie is the best but i am disgusted with the shitty attitude and the bad blood that has been caused by this pickle crap over the past few years that i dont go there any more.

There’s a Harold’s Deli in Lyndhurst, N.J., about a 1/2 mile from exit 16W on the N.J. Turnpike, on the sevice road where routes 3 & 17 meet, just past Giants Stadium. (2 miles from Moonachie) ..That’s where I get my St. Patty’s Day corned beef sandwiches ..good shit! 😉
