Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon debated this story on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption last night (citing the Deadspin story). Wilbon admitted that he didn’t care about this story and accused Tony of not knowing Joey Chestnut from Joey Bishop. Tony predicted that Koby was “playing opossum” and that he would come to Coney Island and whoop Joey.

By the way, not to spoil anyone’s fun, but the fact that the IFOCE is embracing this “day to day” story on their website might be an indication that this “injury” is either grossly overblown or a complete fabrication just to drum up some extra excitment and interest. Seriously. A jaw injury? It’s just too perfect. The only thing that leads me think that there might be a modicum of truth to it all is that after Joey’s 59.5 performance, this year’s event really doesn’t need extra excitement.

I am really confused by it all, but I stand by what I said over a year ago. Koby WILL NEVER allow himself to lose to an American eater. If he shows he wins. If he doesn’t show it’s because he doubts his chances, which, I must admit, surprises me.

You know, about a third of all avid tennis players get tennis elbow. I wouldn’t think it is hard for Koby or Joey, or anyone that trains regularly with tough foods like hot dogs to come down with a problem like TMJ. Does IFOCE give workers’ comp for work related injuries?

Gee, what a shock that ESPN that will be televising the Coney contest, is putting up CE related things very often.

that is a great point mega munch. if something is on the ifoce web site then you can be pretty sure that it is made up for marketing purposes

Dave, ILKR, there are all types of news items being posted on that site, anything that has to do with IFOCE brand competitive eating. That one blurb about Koby doesn’t really strike me as a marketing ploy as much as an update. But, still, there is a chance it is.
Dave, what was the tone of the ESPN conversation, that they pretty much don’t care about CE as a sport, or just about Koby’s injury?

They’ve talked about CE on PTI in the past. True to thier personalities, Mike Wilbon acts like he doesn’t care about CE (which he genuinely doesn’t) while Tony Kornheiser gushes with enthusiasm (as he does for most pop culture related stories). His excitement was slightly tongue-in-cheek though. It’s hard to take either of those guys too seriously…which is why I like the show.
