Indian engineer dies in eating contest

More sad news from Asia. The Times of India reports that Saurav Sabbarwal, a solutions engineer with Nokia Siemens Networking, died after choking in a pastry eating contest held at an office cafeteria in Guragon, India. It is not clear if the contest was pre-planned or an informal competition.

Nokia produced a commercial featuring a competitive eating fan who uses her phone to get contest updates.

update The contest was apparently a company activity and there was no medical supervision present. Mr. Sabbarwal’s family is considering suing Nokia Siemens.

“Saurav had stuffed himself with so many pastries so fast that his windpipe was choked. In fact, when we put him on the resuscitation machine, foodstuff was coming out of the windpipe. There was no way air could have passed through to his lungs,”

..I feel bad for the guy but these stories always seem rather vague to me ..was the contest supervised? ..did he start choking during the contest or afterwards? ..and why would they hook him up to a resuscitation machine before clearing his airway first? ..are they even aware of the Heimlich Maneuver?

People choke to death every day (I ass/u/me), the proximity to an eating contest makes for a compelling headline but there needs to be alot more details before you can lay the blame on competitive eating.

Saurav, a resident of Patparganj in east Delhi, was taking part in the pastry competition at the office cafeteria when he suddenly felt unwell and went to the toilet, police said. “They were all having fun when Saurav went to the washroom around 1.30pm. After he hadn’t returned for a long while, his friends went into the toilet and found him unconscious,” said Satinder

He was eating sweets ……. Which will make you sick if to much fast …… chocking was cause by him throwing up after the contest .and no one was there to help him because he was in the rest room ….

as far a some jackass name fur PETE . who are you to run your mouth …..

It’s probably more fair to say that the blame is shared. Clearly the guy wouldn’t have died if he were just eating a normal meal at a normal pace. The contest had SOMETHING to do with it. But maybe the lax supervision and a poor response were additional factors.
