Japanese coverage of 2001 Nathan’s finals
The website for TV Tokyo has a page about the July 19, 2001 edition of TV Champion which culminated in footage from the 2001 Nathan’s finals where Takeru Kobayashi doubled the record from the previous mark of 25. The program also included qualifiers to determine who would compete alongside defending champion Kaz Arai. In one of the qualifiers, eaters competed against a sushi making robot.

That event, that mark set by Kobayashi, will always stick out in my mind as the absolute greatest competitive eating performance to date–by far. That’s because Koby DOUBLED the previous world record of 25 and change.
To put things in perspective, someone would have to come along and consume well over 100 dogs and buns to accomplish a similar standard (i.e. or eat 92 dozen {1,104} oysters, in 10 minutes to double Sonya’s record).
We are not likely to see another Takeru Kobayashi in this lifetime.
