Thats so cool for Joey. I’d be worried about not making the plate.
Someone had mentioned that Joey is thinking about competing in Japan. That would be an awesome experience for him and maybe a small team of top Americans. Potentially it could make for an interesting documentary showcasing the differences in Japanese and American Competitive Eating. I know I found descriptions of Charles Hardy’s trip (in ‘Eat this Book’ or ‘Horsemen’?) fascinating.
I’d love to see the visual contrasts between Him or Pat and ‘The Giant’, eating a thousand little bowls of funny noodles.
On a lighter note, if they want to schedule Joey out of the country on the Friday before the Superbowl, thats ok with me…..

It would be great for Joey to attend a contest or two per year over there. I’d rather see Koby based here in the good ol’ US of A., which, as I say, is only a rumor. But at least then Koby won’t be blamed for not competing enough.
As a matter of fact, it’s harder for Koby to keep a competitive edge by competing in so few contests per year, and he is unable to practice with the same food as American eaters do. So he is at a tremendous disadvantage all the way around by living in Japan. Yet he is punished for it.
If he came here he’d win every freakin’ contest he entered; he could win $100K per year just in prize money alone. (Plus he’d win a car each year from Matt Blatt, as he could likely eat about 250 wings in a half hour.)
And then the doubters would see just how great the man is.

Rhonda, I’m not tracking you on Koby’s disadvantage. I’ve been under the impression that he is not employed and he trains full time for competitive eating. I would consider that an advantage, not a disadvantage. And the comment about him not being able to train with the same food isn’t correct. I’ve lived in Japan and know from experienc that any product manufactured in the U.S., including Krystals, Nathans, etc…, is available in Japan. And if you’re Kobayashi, these are all provided to you free.
Koyabashi isn’t being punished for living in Japan. But he was punished on the 4th of July. Joey Chestnut punished him…and punished him badly!

Very informative misinformation WE. I’ve lived in Japan too for nearly 10 years and I know for a fact that the food in Asia is a close facsimile at best, even if they have it at all! The food that is available costs damn near an arm and a leg and Koby would have to pay out the ass to train with it. So get your facts straight.
Nevertheless I expected as much given your anti-Koby rhetoric. Anyway, the fact is Koby has defeated Joey 6 of 7 times they’ve faced off and it will soon be 7/8 come November.
If you’re indeed a true Joey fan, you;’d better hope that Koby refrains from pulling up stakes and moving to the U.S or Joey will be lucky to ever defeat Koby again.
Your boy’s # 1 World ranking is simply a temporary gift — different standards for different eaters.
Message to Joey: “Joey, just beat Koby once in awhile and we’ll give (not award) you # 1. Message to Koby: “Koby, to keep your # 1 ranking you simply can never lose.”
Just in the last 8 months Joey has lost to Bob and Sonya (in Meatballs) and Pat B blew his ass away in peppers just 4 months ago. And Joey’s # 1? Give me a damned break!

rhonda, and pat should have been ranked above joey after that st. patty fiasco on spike

The facts are straight. Kobayashi is a full time competitive eater without a real job. He has all day and all year to train.
And as far as the rankings are concerned, we’re talking about #1. How many times does the heavyweight champion of the world get to be beaten before he loses his belt?

Rhonda, it appears to me that you are the one holding a competitor to the “to keep your # 1 ranking you simply can never lose.” by sayng that the half of a pound loss in meatballs and the loss in peppers makes him less than #1. Do you notice how many competitions Joey has done in those 8 months?
Also,
How long ago did you move back from Japan? Wyatt has been very creditable thus far, I wouldn’t immediately discredit him.

Are Nathan’s really available in Japan? On the MTV special (“I want to be a competitive eater”) they show Koby shopping in the grocery store and showing us the only close approximation Japan has to American hot dogs (some sort of pale, disgusting looking sausage things). Besides, I thought Japan has had an on again/off again embargo on U.S. beef for several years now.
And I don’t think Koby’s lack of a job really helps him train any more than a working U.S. eater. It’s not like serious body building (which Koby also does), which can take several hours a day to accomplish properly.

Wyatt comparing boxing with CE is like comparing apples withoranges. In boxing there is no variety, just one standard 15-round fight. Look how many different foods there are in CE. Look at the different lengths of the contests. Considering both variables there are close to 50 different events.
Also, look at golf. Does Tiger lose his # 1 world ranking after one or two nonwinning outings after winning more contests than anyone else in a given year? Nope. And I realize that’s not the best analogy either, but Koby has simply been cheated. No amount or angle of logic will convince me different.
Joey is # 1 simply because of money, given the need to see how much the pockets can be lined by having the MY belt around an American’s waist. Koby remains the best eater now or ever. It will become Krystal clear in November and every contest thereafter.
None of you know how strong Koby’s mind is, and this is a mental game. Watch and learn is all I have to say. Good thing for Joey that there’s no Brat contest. Good thing for Joey there’s no U.S. Open.
And to answer Carey’s question, I returned from Japan a bit over 2 years ago. I’d tell you more, but I’ve no need to. I just know what I know. That’s all I can say. …..

ILKR. I disagree there too. Pat B. DID NOT deserve to be ranked above Joey after that one JP event on St. Patt’s Day.
One contest victory in a single food (especially an uncommon/weird one like peppers — in only 3 minutes) does not cut the mustard for toppling someone who has demonstrated superiority in most all other foods.

MM and RE, I think we are relying on out of date information to argue whether Kobay actually trains with Nathan’s hot dogs. Rhonda, when you lived there did you have a Sam’s Club or Costco membership? I know the tiny grocery store on the corner isn’t going to have them, but come on now…

I am unhappy to see that rhonda evans has turned on eater x. I do enjoy the anger and tone in his posts though. I do disagree that kobey will win krystals though. Joey is strong for 8 full minutes, I would bet that the outcome will be similar to nathans. Whether the ranking were a gift or not, on the 4th joey proved that he can beat kobeyashi. An 8 minute contest is a hell of a lot easier to win than a 12 minute contest. I wonder who rhonda’s next horse will be, first it was eater x, sonya, and lefevre, now it’s kobey, can we assume this sidelined and knowledgeable fan of competitive eating will tout boone as his next eater?

Kobayashi is supplied with Nathan’s hot dogs.
And as far as his “bodybuilding job”; was I the only one that noticed that he’s obviously laid off the weightlifting. No flexing of the arms or abs this years, and he looked about 20 lbs lighter. It appeared that he focused his energy on training for Nathans and not bodybuilding.
