Keiji Oguni to do Hartford qualifier?
In this Buffet post, Bob Shoudt claims that Kenji Oguni, who finished 4th last year with 29 hot dogs, will compete in the Hartford Nathan’s qualifier on Saturday. If this is true, it does not seem fair that foreign competitors can compete in US qualifiers but American eaters cannot enter overseas qualfiers.

Sorry to have scared anyone with this. I posted that comment on 4/1 – April Fools. It didn’t get picked up on until recently. I have no knowledge of him going anywhere.

If that is true, I feel that it is most unfortunate. I respect Oguni, but I hope Tim is on his game. I believe Tim could possibly eat close to 30 dogs if he has a really good day.
Also, I am a bit confused. What about professional respect and consideration for eaters regarding home town loyalty. I mean why can’t Oguni go to a location, which is not a home town or fan base of a highly ranked eater who is expected to make it to Coney? It just seems that the IFOCE could deconflict appearances to accommodate this. Am I out in left field here? It sure seemed that way in the old days.

Anybody know who will be at the qualifier in Cranbury NJ on June 23rd?

Cranbury would be my 3rd strike, if I tank in East Hartford and Philly….that would, how they say “SUCK”. 😉

Yes, that’s an odd rule (that foreign competitors can enter US qualifiers but not vice versa). Does anyone know what happened in Hartford this weekend. Hopefully X was able to put down at least 30. They need him on Coney this year.
Can’t the IFOCE offer exemptions to certain eaters? Sort of like sponsor’s exemptions on the pro golf circuit. If an eater goes oh-for-three in the qualifying rounds, but should be at Coney either because he or she “deserves” it or because their presence is good for the sport, the IFOCE should be able to let them compete. Of course, this tactic can backfire (William “The Refrigerator” Perry anyone?). Did he qualify that year? Was there a qualifying circuit that year?

That was ’03 and there were qualifiers then. He actually won one with 12 HDBs.

Rhonda,
I’m afraid that the old days of avoiding an eaters home town are over! When the qualifying starts the gloves come off. There just isn’t enough contests to go around. Congratulations tim on the win. I bet you do the TRE in coney.
