It’s not a crushing margin exactly, but it is a big difference in percentage-wise consumption. I wonder what this does to the hype surrounding any future showdowns between these guys. I hope this wasn’t the last!

BTW, each slice of pizza was a quarter of a pizza, so 40 slices make it for 10 pizzas (and 7 for pete) which IMHO put that way gives more of an idea of how much pizza has been eaten that using the number of slices eaten.

Go match to watch. Kobi was a machine with 40 slices. That’s a 14″ pie cut into 4. Pete got 29 slices.

They were at the same pace for 6 min or so then Pete slowed down. Good show.

Not even close, losing by 12 slices and a food that I’m sure is not one of Kobi’s fortes. HDBs would have been even more embarrassing for Pete. All this proves is what everybody except except his weightlifting buddies already knew — Pete’s mediocre at best. I guess Pete can go back to eating watermelon against amateurs, but his cred his damaged. As for Kobi, what’s he going to do next? Eat against Dale Boone at a state fair? Options for both eaters seem limited now.

The fact that Pete has only been doing this for 3 years is impressive in itself, all you haters. 29-40 IS something to brag about. Kobi’s got 7 more years experience on him, so just imagine what level Pete would be at in the next year or two. He’s only gonna get better! So haters can keep on hating!!!!!

Maybe it’s the photo angle, but to me those don’t look like 14″ pizzas. More like 12″. A 14″ pizza would be like a Domino’s or Pizza hut large. But both eaters did absolutely amazing!

Stephanie – I agree, they look more like 12″. The comment under one photo says they are about 1 pound each.

The Toronto Sun article is a bit of a detriment to Pete where it says he “once ate a 72 oz steak”. Doesn’t he in fact hold the world record?

OJ, the note you added to the database regarding koby “first contest in 11 months” is not correct, as he competed in a shrimp competition in singapure about 3 months ago.

Anonym 12:10 am is right that Pete aproach to the contest was a little derrotist, and that could affect his perfomance but anyway it wouldn’t have make any difference in the final standings right now. His attitude will change for sure as Koby’s halo fades away. That said, the lenght of the contest probably hurt Pete more than his aforementioned aproach. I’d like to see them eat togheter at a shorter contest next time.

And hm… they don’t look like 12′ pizzas to me though they are not perfect regular 14′ pizzas anyway.

Pete did better than I expected, and deserves much credit here.

But as good as Pete is, he is a couple of notches below Koby.

The only person in this world who can rival Koby is Joey Chestnut, and that’s almost exclusively in dunking foods (competitive drinking).

Koby is going to run wild as an independent. He will likely never lose again, unless he’s DQed.

When all is said and done (after Koby has lured enough sponsors away from the IFOCE), MLE will wish they had swallowed their pride (no pun intended) and worked out some less restrictive business rules to keep their best known star.

That’s a rather sad state of affairs for all MLE eaters except Joey, because he’s top-ranked. And if you’re not in the IFOCE top four or five, you’re just chicken-pecking for crumbs.

So so. I’m not impressed. A girlfriend and boyfriend eating in the same contest, obviously for fun, ate 11 and 14 slices each, which is 27.5% and 35% of Kobi’s total. If they pulled off this ratio in a hot dog contest, they would have eaten 18.15 and 23.1 hot dogs and buns, which would be crazy for a couple of first-timers out on a date. It doesn’t seem like Kobayashi gave his best effort. Seems like he mailed it in once it was safe to take it easy.

Pete did pretty damn well. That’s a lot of pizza. I think Pete’s main issue is that he hits a wall about 2/3 of the way into most contests where he slows down (understandably). Koby just plows through entire contests without slowing down too much which gives him a serious edge. The guy is really going to be unstoppable as an independent eater.

I would also throw Pat in there as competition for Koby, just not in HDBs… that’s all joey.

  36. Anonymous said

    August 23, 2010 @ 11:20 am

Without Koby, even with Joey, MLE really will need to reinvent itself as far as sponsorship is concerned. Without sponsors, there is no competitive eating and no MLE. IFOCE is facing its biggest challenges, no Koby, poor or different economy. Eaters ranked below the top may do well to consider being bigger fish in smaller ponds. The future is up for grabs.

A “crowd of 100 people watched” says the article…that’s all they could get to show up? I don’t think MLE is too worried

The mentioned boyfriend and girlfriend who competed – I dont think youre giving them enough credit. A girl eating 2 and a quarter 14″ pizzas is way above average i would say. But saying that, I dont think Koby gave it his all… if Joey or Pat were there im sure Koby would have kicked it up a notch or 2, and we would probably be looking at totals of 12 or more pizzas.

I think its one of those things with Kobayashi. He often starts contests at a certain pace and maybe falls behind a couple of the other eaters. But then he finds a new rhythm and takes things to a new level (for example KSO ’09), and that is truly awe inspiring to watch as he gains massive leads over the other eaters. Those are some amazing Kobi moments, and I think he can only push himself that hard when he has the pressure of other great eaters, or a good crowd cheering him on.

    1. Could koby have eaten more? If pushed, probably he could have done more.

    2. Are that percentages you bring up that weird? In the last rib eating contest Joey Chestnut was in (Jul 11 this year) he broke his old record and settle a new one by eating 9.5 lbs in 12 minutes. A guy called Jeremy williams ate 3.35 lbs (35%) of what Joey ate and another guy ate 2.9 lbs (30.5%) of what Joey ate.

In the Flauta eating contest (6 december last year) there are two eaters that could be considered amateur, but i’m going as low in the list as to find the first person that hadn’t competed in any CE event whatsoever prior to that contest acording to Eatfeats database. Akeem “Scoob” Kellogg ate 25 flautas (38.5% of that of Ben monson, who won by eating 65).

Those are the first two contest i looked at after seeing you statement. I looked up for Joey Chesnut in eatfeats database and picked up the last contest he won, and then clicked in Ben monson and looked for the flauta contest as the gyoze eating championship doesn’t show anything but the top three in that contest.

You can do the math for any other contest, including the recent tako challenge of Joey Chestnut where one of the members of the opposing team ate 10 tacos(37%) and another one did 8 (29.5%)

It’s not your fault not to be impresed, but don’t bring up percentages as if they justified your feelings ;).

Timing for MLE was really horrible this weekend, with Joey, their golden boy, losing to amateurs, and Koby, the outcast, easily dusting the best independent eater on the planet … until yesterday.

Said another way, the Krystal Champion’s stock becomes more blue chip, while the mighty mustard yellow belt holder’s stock gets taken out back and shot! (Yes this is overdramatized, but it drives the point home.)

Hey, IFOCE, when you set your champ up with these publicity stunts, make sure you cut him some slack to ensure he wins … ya think? I mean, I’m sure I’m not exactly a pioneer in this logic.

  44. anonymous said

    August 23, 2010 @ 2:36 pm

Pete, i think you really blew it this time. Talk about timing you might have waited until your movie got some play before going up against the greatest eater of all time. / What would be the incentive of watching your movie after you got your butt whipped by Kobayashi ? Ok you ate 28 slices which would have annihilated most eaters but your performance was similar to Don Lerman vs Hal Shimmel.

Point well made Rhonda. How anyone could think that you are anything other than the great Rhonda Evans, a fan, is beyond me. You are certainly not Janus, certainly not Rich Shea, certainly not CLC’s Mom. There is absolutely no logic to linking those names with yours. Hey, not to be a party pooper, but how did Kobayashi get into Cananda with his N.Y. charges still technically pending? Canada Immigration does not allow you admission if you are currently having or about to undergo a trial, have not completed your penalty (e.g., still on probation), or are waiting for your charges to be formally dismissed after a certain period of time. This final option applies to Kobayashi, if I am not mistaken. Maybe they were not aware of all the publicity surrounding his case and didn’t check or didn’t have those records available. But I know people with DUI’s or shoplifting charges from 30 years back who were denied admission to Canada recently because of their past transgressions.

Kobi is a giant. He can go anywhere.. he can eat anything.. it doesn’t matter if those pizzas were thin or fat –
he ate at his best as he always does. Pete is a great competitor as well; and seems like a really cool person, unlike Chestnut, who has no jam at all, even if he does win. Don’t competitors need personality as well as being a strong athlete? Popularity comes with good personality, no? Kobi has that no matter what he does. Good person, great athlete, personality, and fair.
Pete is the same.. he will go far too.

Go Kobi, GO! I’m excited to see what Kobi will do with his future. He could do anything really.
He should be making the rules and judging.
