Krystal Square Off qualifiers announced
The 2006 Krystal Square Off qualifiers were announced today. Eight qualifiers will be held:
Aug. 24 – 27 Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sept. 1 – 4 Jacksonville, Fla.
Sept. 8 – 10 Nashville, Tenn.
Sept. 15 – 17 Knoxville, Tenn.
Sept. 21 – 24 Atlanta, Ga.
Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 Memphis, Tenn.
Oct. 5 – 8 Perry, Ga.
Oct. 13 – 15 Jackson, Miss.
Oct 28 Finals Chattanooga, TN – will be televised on ESPN2
The purse is $30,000, probably the largest ever for an American eating contest, with a $10K first place prize. Prizes are listed down to 13th place, so they will probably be at least 4 wild card qualifiers after taking into account Kobayashi and the 8 qualifier winners. With finals prizes down to last place, it is unlikely we will see a one burger performance on October 28.
Joey Chestnut appeared at the press conference announcing the qualifiers and ate a record 28 burgers in 2 minutes

After reading about his 2 min 28 krystals i have to say Chestnut is the greatest competitive eater of all time. I go on record as stating this as of today. Joey doesnt have to thank me or anyone else and i am not saying this just to kiss up to the man . I have decided as of today that what he has accomplished in the past year or so is absolutley mind boggling. The scary part is he has plenty of room to get even better. Expect to see one on one match contests with him and Kobe in the not to distant future

Surely Joey wasn’t trying his best. I would have expected about 30 – 35. I guess he was holding back.

BB Joey is certainly a great eater. No argument from me. But I think its much too early to call him the greatest of all time. Let him earn 6 or 7 Mustard Belts and and get a few more titles in different foods and I might start to think that way. I’m looking forward to seeing how many oysters or lobsters or clams or shrimp or eggs or french fries or how much pasta or rice, etc., etc that he can eat first. Joey is simply no Kobayashi. But that’s not a slight against Joey.

One more thought and I’m done with this sight for awhile. Why not change the name to trencherjoey.com. Trencherwomen was what it was about for awhile, but not anymore man! The posts about trencherwomen are simply token appearances. Can’t blame anyone, however, because there are so few of them, and it’s necessary to change with the times.
Hey, if “The Gal” improves enough, maybe she can come to the US and give Joey a run, since no other man can.
Over and out for awhile.
Love ya’ll!

MM – I don’t think Joey and Kobe swallow. They push things down.

Time will tell if Joey is the greatest eater of all time. As of now he has only Kobe to pass and he is right there with him now and getting better with each passing day. His potential seems limitless and it is exciting to watch him get more awesome with each contest (even as he is destroying you in the process). You may not like being trampled like a bug but it has really generated excitement for the sport and Joey has proven what can be accomplished with extremely hard work and training. My prediction is that he will pass Kobayashi in the not too distant future and will hit the 60 mark at Coney next year. He certainly has made a believer out of me!

if you qualify in a store, you can go to the regional (or something like that) to then make it into the finals.
all you have to do is show up and win the 2 minute round.
then you get yourself a seat at an 8 minute one …. then on to the finals.
what if someone makes the finals and is not IFOCE affiliated?
it would look real bad to deny participation to anyone who qualified.

I have to admit that Joey Chestnut is very talented. There’s a high chance that he will defeat Kobayashi one day, not too long from now. I’m a Kobayashi fan, but I just had to say that.

but if I don’t want to be affiliated, and I just say…. “I’m out” wouldn’t it look bad?
especially if half the field did it?

It is an insult to one’s intelligence when you go on sites like the buffet or humblebob and read about sarcastic negative remarks regarding Chestnut and other eaters. We know for a fact that it is all play hate stuff . Bob loves Joey and his latest update is not very amusing because we know it is bullshit . On the buffet, the trash talk section follows the same pattern. The ones that trash each other are good friends and are doing this as a goof. Find another way to entertain us. I dont buy it for a minute!
