List of Philadelphia area eating challenges in the eatfeats database

It would be interesting to learn why a made for TV sandwich at Tony Luke’s was used as the episode’s challenge when Jim’s Steaks has maintained a cheesesteak record for over 30 years. Perhaps the current record of 13 cheesesteaks in an hour by “Humble” Bob Shoudt was too daunting. (The program guide says that Jim’s Steaks will appear in the episode.)

13 cheesesteaks might not be the overall Philadelphia record. In a 1978 article, Lynda Kuerth, Jim’s steaks record holder from 1977 to 2001 (11 sandwiches) said she ate 15 steak sandwiches during a visit to Philadelphia. (The location and duration of that feat was not mentioned.)

Most of Adam’s challenges on MVF involve eating a large food item or a small number of very spicy items. In other words, he just hopes to finish the challenge. He doesn’t usually try to beat a record — i.e. eating the most of a certain item — which is probably why they didn’t go with Jim’s Steaks. It’s kind of disappointing that Tony Lukes had to invent a challenge just for the show. Sort of seems like cheating to me, but if it makes for good TV, then you can’t really argue.

Yeah, D, I think the hot dogs in North Carolina was the only challenge when he broke a record.

    1. Adam says in the intro to the show. that “he is no competitive eater”, so its makes sense that he never (except once) tries to break a record.
    2. Why didnt they give El Wingador a shout out in this episode. I mean they did give him some airtime but did not say who he was.

Look how exciting is a show where you have Chestnut eat the Carnivore in 2 minutes and 14 seconds.

Why would anybody give El Wing A Nut any shout outs, the last Philly Wing Bowl he was in he got 3rd. Big deal. I guess Adam should have said, “Special thanx to El-Has-A-Been!”

and if you eat it, you still have to pay $43 or is it free? Probably still have to pay because Tony Luke is a self centered cheap ass.

Yes it was at least 5 lbs. It was $47. I got mushrooms on it. Tony Luke wasnt there. They took my number and address and told me he was going to call me to come down for a picture and give me a shirt. They didnt go into if I would get my money back since I ate it. I dont think they thought anyone was actualy going to do it. I just wanted to try it. I love cheese steaks. I always watch that show and figured it was close enough to my house to go over and give it a shot. It was hard for me but I did it. They put you out front on your own fold out table and chairs. It comes in a big box and all. Lots of people were there asking me and my buddy all kinds of questions. Fun time.
