I can name two feisty little Asian women who are extremely proud to be true legal Americans (without any hyphens). I vote for an all-expense-paid trip to the taco contest where they can whip some serious ass at and away from the table. I’m guessing neither one would have any problem discussing the issue up-close and personal with anyone who has concerns about how the process actually works in this country if you have the balls to do it legally.

Well we all know that the best place to protest laws in Arizona is Minneapolis, it is after all the state capitol as far as they know, even though it is not.

Well, the protestors did show up for the event.

About one minute into the contest, the crowd starting cheering loudly and wildly.  At first I thought it was pretty neat, but actually all heck was breaking loose all around me.  Apparently, a large group of people (30-40?) were trying to get into the event, which was held at a ground floor restaurant in a nice high rise office building in downtown Minneapolis.  And the organizers were trying to keep them out.  The protesters were chanting “No Justice.  No tacos!” although at first I thought they were just cheering on one of the other competitors by chanting “Go Justin.  Eat tacos.”

In truth I really didn’t see much of what was happening.  While many of you folks can eat more than me and faster than me, I do know what it means to be focused.  Through it all I kept right on eating and I think my fellow competitors did too.  Indeed, I might not have noticed the crowd at all (except for the chanting) except that it is a bit difficult to miss a person who drops some protest literature on your plate.  Actually, I only got the details later when I reviewed the event with my manager.

As to the contest itself, I won by eating 13.5 quarter pound soft shell tacos in 5 minutes.  Two guys tied for second with 11.5.  That tie was broken with a two taco overtime.  I sat in awe watching that.  I don’t care if it’s a tie at 60 hot dogs or a tie at 225 jalapenos or this tie at 11.5 tacos.  If you have eaten as much as you can as fast as you can . . . well big kudos to anyone who can start again and eat more.

And the $500 gift card for first prize?  Well at first I was wondering if I would ever be able to spend $500 at a taco restaurant.  That was before I found out that it also good at their Cantina.  $500 of happy hour margaritas!  Suffice to say that this 52 year old grandpa has some new found friends in the office today.
