What an absolute joke. After Top 2, everything else is debatable. I would put Webb above Wehry, and maybe above Miki too. Why is Zosan ranked above Mayoi?? They both only did one contest in MLE (nathans), and I’m pretty sure Mayoi ate like 3 more HDBs than Zosan. This makes no sense, and I’m sure some will treat it as “sexism”.

Heavy D is ranked above Pat B.??? I know Pat didnt do many contests, but he could probably wake up hungover, roll out of bed, and do any contest within 2 hours of waking up and still beat Derek.

Even though Di$count Darren is retired, I’m glad he stayed in the rankings as he is a legend.

You mean objective rankings are debatable!?!?!? No way! Probably should piss and moan to the ether anonymously to tell them how I really feel! Like the grinch yelling to himself in his cave

There is not full information about those who have risen in the ranks.

@3:26 I think the word you were looking for is “subjective”, not “objective”. Go buy a dictionary, and look-up the definition of each, please.

Yea, we all know the rankings are “subjective”, but why? They could very easily use a formula based on number of contest appearances, placing at each contest, margin of victory, etc. to “objectively” rank eaters. But no–they just all get into a room, pour some whiskey and light some cigars, and then just seem to casually decide who the top MLE eaters are after #1 and #2 (pretty sure Joey #1 and Geoff #2 is well-accepted rankings at this point).

@7:22 congratulations. You’re right. I mistakenly said objective vs subjective……my bad. You’re degree paid off With that said you can’t just do ranking based on points per contest and amount of appearances. While those things matter…..how do you weigh each contest? Does win at something like corn or candy or spam mean as much as ribs or tamales or burritos? What about who you were facing? How many ranked competitors were in? Was it capacity or technique? Please tell me your “easy” formula. You can determine a lot based off of those factors…..but you can’t tell the whole story.

    You mean *your* degree, methinks.

They could easily decide on weights to assign to the various factors and variables. Just like they determine strength of schedule in college football, the “strength of eaters” attending each contest would become apparent in the results. Say for instance, if Esper won all 8 contests in which Joey didn’t compete, but only won 1 contest of 4 that Joey was also in, the inference is that Joey is a better eater / higher ranking despite fare fewer contest appearances.

They could have a points system like NASCAR or the PGA if they really wanted to. But they are too lazy and like the flexibility to be able to give higher rankings to people based not only on their eating abilities, but also their potential marketing value to MLE/the Shea bros. If MLE eaters were given more transparency in how rankings are decided, they’d have more incentive to try to improve. Although, I think we all know that a higher ranking means little in terms of compensation. Unless you are number one and win Nathan’s, you’d be lucky to get sponsors that provide you with income or appearance fees for events.

If you’re saying compare it to college football……people are pissed about college football rankings all the time saying that they aren’t fair! Also, PGA and NASCAR events are largely the same events each time. CE events have huge variance in terms of capacity, speed , field, technique. You also mentioned that the sheas want to be able to rank people based on marketability……yeah……that’s smart……not unfair.

I rly don’t care n-e more. u juss wunna argue it seems. I’m guessin u are among the ranked and disagree with my sentiment/opinion. Unless you are among the top 3 or 4, then it doesn’t impact you either.

I think you are in the minority of people when it comes to how they decide on rankings. Like how can you justify Zosan being ranked higher than Mayoi–when Mayoi ate like 3.5 HDBs more than him. And they both have 1 MLE appearance, EVER. If you and one other eater both did a single MLE contest, and you ate more than said other eater, would you be OK with MLE ranking you below him/her?? I doubt it.

Didn’t Zosan compete in 8 MLE events in Thailand & best Miki Sudo & Nick Wehry in multiple events?

Guys you Faldo know that most of the Pro Eaters have real jobs and this is just a hobby that they train for and LOVE the competition. As for the Shea’s they made MLE and yes it is a business so yea they are going to make money that’s the name of the game. If you’re one of the Pro’s you come out as much as you can to compete and train to get better and better . I really don’t get all the pissing and moaning on this subject !!

@7:04. Just because you think that it’s “smart” to inflate certain eaters rankings because it’s marketable doesn’t mean it’s not fair. It’s not fair. And it would occur to me only someone thinking they were benefiting from such activities would defend it. To me, what’s not fair is when the “talent” doesn’t live up to hype and the sponsor doesn’t get their moneys worth.

Agree with 10:17-up-vote! Smart and unfair are not mutually exclusive. Just like it may be “smart” to hoard a bunch of food at the onset of a pandemic, some might see it as “unfair” if there’s no food left by the time they get to the store…

There are some phenomenal eaters that never give sponsors their moneys worth because of their moods or demeanors.

Funny to see arguments about wanting transparency, while your identity is hidden by “anonymous” lol
