More on IFOCE points system
Competitiveeatingnews.com has more on the IFOCE points system that will be implemented starting with tomorrow’s Pretzel Twister contest. Contests will award a total of 100, 50, 25 or 15 points depending on their level of competition and purse. Points will be awarded to the top 10 finishers. The pretzel contest will be a 50 point event, and points will be awarded as follows: 1st Place = 18 pts, 2nd Place = 12 pts, 3rd Place = 6 pts, 4th Place = 4 pts, 5th Place = 3 pts, 6th Place = 2 pts, 7th Place = 2 pts, 8th Place = 1 pt, 9th Place = 1 pt and 10th Place = 1 pt

I like that they’re doing this because it means they will record everyone’s total, every time. I like that, if I’m going to spend my money/time to do an event, that at least there will be a record of how poorly I did 🙂

I like the fact that Nathan’s and Krystals, both sandwich-type foods are only 100 points, or double the 50-point value, of some of the other events like pretzels. At least this is more objective that just subjectively assigning so much weight to Nathans or Krystals, because of the prestige/total purse money. Whereas before (to me) it looked as if Nathan’s and Krystals were AT LEAST 3 to 4 times as important as any other event. So I’m starting to like what I see of this point system.
On the other hand, it will punish those who might have been thinking of “boycotting” Nathan’s this year, at least point-wise. But otherwise, so what?

Don, apparently I know much better than you care to admit. How many dogs did you eat in the last qualifier? Where did you finish in wings last year in Buffalo? Where did you finish in jalapenos last year after you dedicated the match to a loved animal?
Cut the losses and be satisfied. Be smart, like I know (or hope) you can be.

“Points will be distributed to all IFOCE members participating in contests classified as points events, with points being spread among the top ten finishers.”
this sentence is confusing. what about events where there are more than 10 IFOCE eaters? nathan’s has more than 10. many events have more than 10. is there a limit of 10 people in an event? if so, are spots first-come or hand-picked?

not bad.
far less complicated than i would have made it. (thats a good thing)
It’s based on the importance of the event and not the importance of the eaters present. Like Rhonda, I like that they didnt go overboard on points for Nathans or Krystals.
Uh Oh my mind is working (smell that smoke?)
What if I’m Pat Bertoletti, and I want to rack up some serious points to rack up against Joey. Is it ok if I purposely come in 2nd in my first two Nathans Qualifiers, and then win the third? (I actually think it’s ok, because I dont know anyone who’d want to put themselves through that three times.) but just a thought….
Sounds like something fun to incorporate into the eating year. Nice work IFOCE.

This sounds like a pretty good point distribution system. I liked the idea of tying event purses to the eaters present, but that would complicate the system and make it impossible to know the points at stake before hand. Now we need to crunch the numbers from last season (guessing at the points for each event) and see if we agree with the rankings this system creates!

I love the whole idea of a point system! A point system will make it more exact as to where everyone falls into place. I think it will especially benifit all those eaters that travel a lot but do not finish in the top few. Where this could have been very discouraging spending time and money, can now be more rewarding. Without the point system these eaters would go, hopefully have fun, but not get too much in return. Unless they finished in the top few, there name may never be mentioned, there numbers may go unaccounted for, and as far as recorded history goes they may not even appear at all. They would truely be doing it for the fun of it, which can be OK.
Now with the point system, they can at least be acknowledged, have their numbers recorded, and accumulate points to show for all their troubles.
I think it will be really interesting to see how it all pans out over the course of the year. I suppose this will give a lot of people a chance to end up above Takeru in the point total in the end of the year! How fun would that be to say, “You know that Japaneese guy that eats all those hotdogs on TV?…Yeah, I beat him in the point total for 2007!” LOL. Sweet.

Yes, good job. I like that they will be accountable for tallying everyone’s scores, now. That works out well. It will also allow them to have hard figures behind things like determining rankings and the Rookie of the Year title. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be less subjective when it comes to the actual judging, but this is a great start.

I can’t eat my way out of a paper bag Don. Compared to you, let alone a really good eater like Joey or Pat Bertoletti, I’m a pathetic eater — never entered one contest.
But I’m not the issue Don. I’ve never claimed to be a competitive eater. You have. Anyway, this is not the place or forum for this continued silly mularkey. So stick a fork in me, I’m done. Go get’em … .

MS I think the sentence means that only the top 10 finishers count. (I can’t imagine them scrambling to come up with points for finishers 11 or lower.)

Bravo to the IFOCE…this sounds exciting.
But it’s still not clear what this point system is for. Will it be used to determine rankings or is it part of a separate points-challenge-face-off thing? If it is the new ranking system, the new rankings won’t be available until the end of the year. And if so, Koby will definitely fall from his number one spot and will be lucky to be ranked in the Top 10, judging by how often he visits the U.S. Unless he pulls a David Beckham and makes the move from Japan to LA (although he’d better off in NYC).
Actually, I think I read something on his blog about him looking at apartments in SoHo. Although I could be wrong…my Japanese is a little rusty.

Don if you can fly down to Miami today I think there’s a reasonable chance that their might be one point with your name on it. I have confidence that you could possibly nail down 9-th place.
