I think amateurs (locals) and Kobayashi—-no IFOCE people. They haven’t topped Joey, but what great press it would be if an amateur topped the living legend and 6-time Nathan’s Champ.
Given Koby’s inexperience with Wing Bowl rules, as well as with wings, he is definitely vulnerable.

If Koby is in don’t expect any IFOCE eaters to be competing.

Joey can be topped in a wing bowl, while he has won it (3 times maybe), wings require a completely different skill set. A different gaggle of contestants seem to excel in wings. I have seen videos of qualifiers in my home town and to be honest, the winners were slow. On a national level, the best are very fast. The problem with the wing bowl is that I believe there are unrelated wing bowls. So by adding the name of a restaurant or city to ‘wing bowl’, there might be several wing bowls.
My question, with wing bowl coming up in just a few short months (friday before superbowl) why has this already NOT been decided? I have been waiting for weeks on news of wing bowl qualifiers. At least there is a wing bowl in my city, so even if there is no qualifiers or wing offs there is a large local event for myself.
That said, Joey has won it before he can probably do it again. But can he compete and LOSE this particular contest? in my opinion yes. Everybody is vulnerable.
To be honest, I don’t particularly like the wing bowl “atmosphere”. While i drink and eat, i am not really into a huge party with thousands of people packed into a place like the wachovia center or wherever in philly that they have it this year. just a bit of a phobia i guess. looks like a bad movie 🙂

one more dumb newbie observation from me,
with nathans the qualifers are just like the event. 10 mins. in the wing bowl, the qualifiers are 5 or 10 minutes and the event is 30 minutes. there might be people that can eat 25,35, 40 wings in 5 mins, that doesn’t mean that they can eat 150, 175, 200 in 30 mins.
the qualifiers are inconsistent with the event, maybe this is by design. you get the fastest eaters and then watch them suffer in the long game. with only the cream rising to the top.

WIP doesn’t say a whole lot about Wing Bowl until Thanksgiving so there probably won’t be any news for another week or two. The qualifiers are in different places and all have different wings.

How about this lineup? Kobayashi, Boone, Grace Lee, Furious Pete, Joe Larue, Bob Golic, Jed Donohue, Will Millender, and a virtual Donkey Kong

The Wing Bowl information will be announced the Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year it will be open to all IFOCE pros and Kobayashi will be competing as well (and I believe is being paid an appearance fee).
Cutter, the 1st and 2nd round is 14 minutes. After the first round, the field is narrowed down from 30 to 10. After the 2nd round it is down to the top 5. Then there is a useless 2 minute round.
You have to experience one of these in your life. Nothing funnier then hearing a drunk Chestnut drop the F bomb on the radio.

That would be really cool. But Wrecking Ball is MLE, so unless pros or MLE pros are allowed, that will not happen. Wing Bowl is an “event” with a competitive eating component. It is an extravaganza which really doesn’t have any level eating field at all. It is whatever WIP wants it to be. If they wanted Kobayashi to win, he might. If not, he wouldn’t no matter what. Same goes for every single competitor. Just my opinion.

yeah different wings for different qualifiers. does hooters leave the wingette on there? good points. no two qualifiers can even be compared to one another. bw3 has fairly high quality wings but i dont think they get involved.

I really have a strong desire to compete in a wing event. However my locality has an amateur event that carries a fairly decent prize. And since i am an amateur i feel that this event would great for me. so I am 99.9 percent sure that the winner of the 2011 wing bowl will not be me.
Of the pros I think Erik Denmark and others outside of Kobe and Joey would have a good chance at this event, especially considering what he did with the xxx wings. But since i didn’t see any video of this event it is only a guess that he ate furiously fast instead of just being immune to the heat. Of course he isn’t even the best wing eater on the MLE circuit.

Thanks for your vote of confidence! Like Stallion Italialn said I only do MLE events so unless they add it I can’t see my self competing. I would love to do this event given the chance though!

Thank GOD Wrecking ball won’t partake in wing bowl, it gives the rest of the field a chance now as he will be the greatest competitive eater of all time! His 9th place at pickles, 13th place at Rocky mountain oysters and lets not forget the stellar performance in San Diego where he ate 10 whole hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. This is only a sign of things to come from this competitive eating phenom!
GO WRECKING BALL!

Go to your room big fan and chill. We do not need sarcasm. Wrecking Ball served his country and serves up enthusiasm. What are you doing with your life?

really are we gonna go there with “what have I done with my life”? This is the world wide webs, I can say I’m working towards finding a cure to Cancer. When you post annon like you and I are, there’s no way to prove it right?
Who said I was being sarcastic, maybe I was for real! Besides Enthusiam would make me want to go to my room and sleep, cuz enthusiam in a non team sport is boring! Would we all like Tim Gravy Brown if he was a cheerleader or the shit talker we all know and love?

Jed Donahue, cool dude. Basically knew he wasn’t gonna place in the money, so he sat back, put mustard on his one HDB, enjoyed the show on stage and free trip to NY, then an hour later ate a nice NY meal.
Jed rarely posts on here, but if he see’s your post, hopefully he’ll tell the story in his own words, it’s pretty entertaining.

That story is priceless. I like how OJ often includes it as a poll choice about “The Best Moments at Nathans”

and..thanks anon 7:15 for standing up for me. My choice to serve my country was the best decision I ever made and now I am reaping the benefits by getting a check just to go to school and do MLE competitions. It was something I did for my life but I guess its not for everybody.

If i had the choice to be a good human being or a great eater i would pick the former. In my case i hope it is not too late for either. Eating is not everybodies priority either, there is a contest tomorrow that i would love to take part in, however supporting my family comes first.

besides, in addition to being a good human being, you might just find that perfect food, the perfect competition, a one hit wonder if you will. obscurity surrounds us all.

Seriously how did this thread turn into a Wrecking Ball lovefest? If any of you educated eating fans know anything, you will know Wrecking Ball has a slim to none chance of making it into wing bowl, provided he risked traveling to philly to preform an in studio stunt or one of the many wing offs. Secondly, There are plenty of pros from the Philly/NJ area who this thread should be dedicated to such as US Male, B.O.B, Flash, Wing Kong, and Steakbellie.
Finally this is the most important part of my rant. WIP wants a Joey Chestnut vs. Super Squibb match up after what took place last year. The fact that Koby toured the Wells Fargo Arena and sampled the wings could put this in Jeopardy, due to MLE/IFOCE wanting nothing to do with Koby. Pretty much if Koby says he is attending the MLE will discourage all of its eaters from participating. If that is the case put your money on Rick the Manager!
