New Poll: Disqualification for post-contest reversals?

Both the Sunrise, Fl Nathan’s qualifier and the Houston tamale contest had reversals soon after the contest buzzer. The new poll asks if you think there should be a fixed period after a contest during which a reversal will result in a disqualification, and if so, how long?

I like the rule that says if you clear whats in your mouth it counts .No DQ after that.

Hardy says it best and writes the rules to live by.

When the bell rings, the clock runs out, the buzzer sounds, whatever the game is, it’s over!! Eating five jillion of anything is hard enough….no post-game disqualifications!!

Between 2-5 minutes is more than reasonable. Hopefully that’s time enough to do a couple quick interviews & then go take of “business”?? if necessary.

It is only those who can NEVER handle the amount they stuff in who want it to be at the bell or after clearing one’s mouth.

I think the average fan would be quite shocked & disappointed to find out you can toss your lunch & still win AT ANYTIME, never mind within certain parameters.

To answer SuperPaul, When the buzzer sounds the game is NOT over! If the ball is in the air, it counts after the buzzer, if you use that analogy you would have to go ith a clear mouth, not the buzzer.

Hardy told me one time that the contest is not over till the winner is announced and the other places are awarded. That way if OT is necessary both eaters are in the same condition. After that then if an accident happens it does not affect the outcome or placing. Also I was told if you wandered off after a competion before a winner was announced and places awarded then you were also DQ’d. Time limits won’t work sometimes it takes longer to tally results or weigh food ETC. I think everybody should get atleast 5 minutes to clear your mouth without a penalty.

I’ve always felt that it was reasonable to expect all contestants to keep it down until winners are announced. That’s when it’s officially official. Depending on how much weighing and figuring is required, that is usually only 5 minutes or so. The only time I’ve ever seen it drag out is in really, really close contests.

I’ve seen reversals w/o DQ’s literally seconds after time is called, and that just doesn’t seem right.

I’ve never had to worry about being the winner…yet, so I agree…keep it down til you stand up and wave!!

Good point about no reversals until the results are announced, Bubba. I’d like to change my poll response. I guess the next question is, what qualifies as a “reversal?” When Koby urped up few teaspoons of hot dog slush a few years back at Nathan’s, should that qualify? Of course, he wasn’t DQ’d — nor should he have been — but shouldn’t there be some sort of quantifiable definition of the act?

What’s this talk about how long after a contest is reasonable to keep it down? If we are supposed to be “gurgitators” we have a responsibility to keep it down regardless! If you can’t keep it down after the contest ends, you don’t deserve the praise or spoils that come with winning or placing. If y’all are so worried about your ability of keep the food down, y’all need to step up your capacity training! What seperates a gurgitator from a mere speed eater(and there is a difference) is the ability to keep it down. If you have a reversal anytime on the stage whether during or after, its a wrap for you! An automatic DQ. That’s only fair. Those that don’t agree need to get hungry and focused foreal!

    Tell that to Conti, Badlands

Badlands I agree with you to a certain point. By the time a winner is announced and the contest is a wrap nobody is on the stage anyway. For me it is a point of pride to keep it down, I have had a couple of accidents but never anywhere near a stage.

I think that it should remain the way it is or until they announce the winner. It does not look good if a bunch of eaters puke on the stage myself included.
