New poll: opinion on Joey Chestnut’s unannounced Hooters bye

Joey Chestnut will be competing in the finals of Hooters World Wing Eating Championship tonight despite not competing in a qualifier. No mention of a Joey Chestnut receiving a bye appears in the information about the contest and Joey Chestnut was listed as an expected entrant in the Miami qualifer where he did not appear. The new poll asks what you think about Joey Chestnut not needing to qualify.

WTSP has a gallery and video of Sonya Thomas’ appearance this morning and 620WDAE has a podcast of a Joey Chestnut interview.

Joey is the not the top competitive eater in the world. He deserves a bye in any and every contest that has qualifiers. What does he have to prove? Everyone else does need to qualifuy. There is only one number one and Joey Chestnut is it.

Yes, without a doubt Joey’s the number one eater in the world. Yet, he has lost to Sonya in wings not once but twice now, so it’s no fluke. But if Sonya doesn’t have a problem with Joey getting a buy, I don’t anyone think anyone else has more cred to have a problem with it. If you ask me it’s Sonya’s call if it’s not right, and she’s cool with it. If Sonya wins and beats Joey she looks even stronger and Joey fans couldn’t say “well Joey would of beat her if he was there.” If Joey beats Sonya, that sets up a great rematch at the wing fest in Bufallo. All good things. By the way I heard they’ve really worked at making sure the wings will be weighed properly. More like the wing fest in Bufallo, everybody starting off with the same weighed total and reweigh after the event.

Its not boring for fans. Its only boring for jealous eaters who resent getting their asses handed to them, consistently.

They are hidden behind their anonymous personas, none of which made it to the Hooters finals.

Joey getting a bye left a spot for the winner of the Miami qualifier. If anyone thinks he needs to prove he can win a qualifier, then you never ate at the table with him. He would win the qualifier, so whats the point? Let someone else have the spot.

He only won by 4. That doesn’t sound like someone that should just be given a place at the table. Joey being ranked number 1 should have nothing to do with it. Sonya, Adrian, and the other pros had to qualify. Was there any doubt that they would win their qualifying rounds? A win is a win, but like I said he only won by 4 wings.

Joey has already “qualified” by way of him being the top-ranked MLE eater.

Its truly telling that Chestnuts name was not used to help with any publicity leading up to this event. If Kobi was to compete in a similar contest the promoters would be all over it with his name and face.
Kobi is seen as a valuable asset for marketing events and products. Kobi as a person is a promotion tool unequaled as a “individual” where as Chestnut as proven with this most recent contest for Hooters/MLE apparently lacks value as they did not parlay his ‘fame ‘ in any attempt to draw public interest.
3:45 I don’t agree with most of your post but why would you claim this? “By the way I heard they’ve really worked at making sure the wings will be weighed properly.

“What were the weights? Still waiting, but I have been long since tainted by MLE so even if they do post “weights” I doubt I would respect the numbers.

To get the weights an eater will have to tell us, the only way is if someone looked at the score cards.

Mike Landrich makes a good point. If you make Joey enter a qualifier, he’ll win, which means someone else won’t be at the table. That’s why none of the eaters are complaining about it.
