Non-IFOCE MCs for Tropicana meatballs
Asbury Park Press has a brief preview of Saturday’s meatball contest in Atlantic City. Bob Shoudt, Chip Simpson, Tim Janus along with defending champion Sonya Thomas are listed as expected entrants. The most interesting part concerns who will MC the event:
The contest will be hosted by the “Jersey Guys” Craig Carton and Ray Rossi of NJ101.5, and they will be qualifying one winner through their radio show which airs Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Carton & Rossi have some previous competitive eating experience. They interviewed Kate Stelnick during her post-Denny’s media blitz.

Is Nerz not going to be back so the IFOCE had to go with someone to fill his shoes?

Everyone should stay home Larry is going to mop the floor with everybody. He may even start eating other peoples meatballs. I don’t know how it happened but I didn’t get into this contest it was one of my favorites last year. Good luck to everyone going.

Seeing how he ate 6lbs last year I’m positive he’ll break 3.5lbs as you have predicted. Larry has been training in the same Russian Gym that Ivan Drago trained in before his big fight with Rocky Balboa. This will be a massacre.

I predict a great effort of 6 1/4 lbs for the modern day Rock!

If he eats too much, they may really make him mop the floor…how did he get the Russian’s permission to use that gym? They vetoed my request to use Olga Korbut’s dressing room, even after I told them I would only peek occasionally at the other gymnasts, who, incidentally, all looked a lot like Helen Haggerty.

Assuming Rhonda is correct in how much md Rock will improve, lets extrapolate this out to the entire field. Here are the 2005 results and the 22.5% 2006 estimates.
1st 10.3 $2500 Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas Alexandria, VA this year 12.6 lbs
2nd 8.3 $1000 Joey “Jaws” Chestnut San Jose, CA 10.375
3rd 7.6 $750 “Humble” Bob Shoudt Royersford, PA 9.31
4th 7 $500 Tim “Eater X” Janus New York City, NY 8.575
5th 6.8 $250 Rich “The Locust” LeFevre Henderson, NV 8.33
6th 6 Chip “The Phenom” Simpson Harrisville, PA 7.35
7th 5.3 Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough Newnan, GA 6.49 (not in this year)
8th 5.1 Larry “The Legend” McNeil Atlanta, GA 6.247
9th 5 Allen “Shredder” Goldstein Plainview, NY 6.125
10th 4 Ken “Mongo” Federighi Ocean City, MD 4.9 in ?
11th 3.3 “Beautiful” Brian Seiken Brooklyn, NY 4.04
12th 3.1 “Krazy” Kevin Lipsitz Staten Island, NY 3.8
13th 1.9 Adam “da Bomb” Leffler North Brunswick, NJ 2.3 (not in this year)
however…
Last year Sonya improved 74.5%, if she does it again…= 17.97 this year
Rich improved 32.7% …=7.96 this year
Other 2004-2005 totals are unknown to compare against
That said, here is my predicted order of finish:
Joey
Rich
Bob
Chip
Sonya
Tim
Crazy
B Brian
Pat M

DT I can’t take anything away from Joey, Rich, Bob, Chip, Sonya, Tim, and CL. They are ALL still improving.
Admitting my Sonya bias, I can’t see Sonya doing anything but going all out for this contest. She ate over 10 lbs last year. Assuming the meatballs are as “fast” as they were last year, I expect Sonya to eat 11 – 12 lbs. Assuming that Joey and Pat B shows, I’m predicting Joey and Sonya to fight it out for first and it will go down to the wire between those two.
Pat has become a superior speed eater, but this full length contest of 12 minutes may help Chip, Bob, and Tim more than Pat. (And it won’t hurt Rich.)
Prediction:
Sonya or Joey (1st and 2nd, either way)
Chip
Pat
Bob
Tim
Rich
CL
