What kind of shit is this? Did he get permission from MLE before he undertook this feat? If not then everyone in the organization should do challenges whenever they want

Feel free to do whatever challenges you want, whenever you like. If you’re whining about Pat doing this, you’re probably ranked so low that nobody cares one way or the other. If you’re in the top ten, you don’t need permission anyway.

You independents can be such such dumbasses and anony 10:39 demonstrates while you will always be small time. Let me spell it out. MLE will restrict an eater from doing an event or challenge if the event or challenge conflicts with a current or potential sponsor’s wishes. If not, knock yourself out. By MLE maintaining this policy the league and their eaters gain top sponsors who have the confidence that they won’t be spending money on an eater who will be promoting their company’s competition, a la Kobayashi. That’s why Kobi is now restricted to eating for a fifth rate hot dog company (Hofmann’s) and not a top company. Team Kobi finally got it, but it was too late and now Kobayashi can’t be trusted after he screwed over so many (Crif Dogs, Derby Deli, West Coast Hot Dogs, Nathan’s, etc.). The reason APE, Boone’s follie, and the indies don’t have major contests is that they don’t understand the business of competitive eating. As in any sport, the actual sport and the sport’s participants are just something that might attract advertising and attention to their product. For example, how much do you think Nathan’s and Pepto would pay for a one hour commercial on ESPN on the Fourth of July.

Pat has permission because Pat is awesome. (Truth)

But yes, Go for it! does raise a good point about the double standard that’s applied to lower ranked eaters. The guys who probably have the most passion for competitive eating and deserve a “victory” now and then aren’t allowed to participate in these restaurant challenges. Or at least have to beg for permission.

Good grief, every single comment beginning with the first one assumes that Pat is supposedly “guilty” and everyone goes on from there spinning their wheels. Have a blast guys but there is, as is often the case here, no basis in fact for your speculation. Until Pat himself says yes or no right here, yes I had permission, yes I did not and that goes for everyone else, it is once again a case of divide and supposedly conquer or complain without getting anywhere. Broken record, take it up with MLE, find out, be honest.

Word for word agree with 11:05.

Anyone who claims that double standards or stricter rules are held to the lower ranked eaters, you need to check where you’re getting your information, which is probably the lower ranked eaters. True, MLE will be more kind to more valuable assets, but the truth is the more “valuable” you are, the larger the flag you raise when rules are broken. Imagine the trouble Chestnut would get into if he even took a picture of himself with a pack of Hebrew National Hot Dogs?? U think ranks 30-50 would get in trouble for the same act? Not at all.

Pat has shown his loyalty to MLE, and therefore petty challenges like this get overlooked, or at worse, a shake of the finger. Many lower MLE ranks HAVE NOT showed their loyalty to the league, this is just a fact. One counter-example to this is Big Sexy, who has done a handful of Non-MLE things, is ranked low (#37), but has yet to get the boot. Why, because the guys MLE feels hes not a loose cannon. On the other hand, that late-MLE-member Stephanie Torres had a very valuable potential to the league, but she was a loose cannon and very unreliable, so they dumped her after one strike.

MegaMunch, since i see you posting here on Eatfeats quite often I just have one question for u in regards to these “guys who probably have the most passion for competitive eating”. If someone really has passion for the sport, they would drive themselves into the floor, so wouldn’t they be ranked high? IMO, guys in the top 10 always get bashed for “just showing up without a care and walking away with $$$”, but the truth is all of these guys got to there level of talent because they are passionate about the sport.

I hear you, Anon 1:55 and I don’t mean to take anything away from the top ranked guys. Many of them are passionate about CE, no doubt about that. My argument is that many of the lower ranked guys are just as passionate if not more, and just because they don’t destroy their bodies to train for contests (yeah, I said it) doesn’t mean they’re not passionate or don’t love the sport.

How else can you explain why they remain loyal to the MLE despite winning almost no money and having to deal with so many restrictions against non-sanctioned contests and restaurant challenges? Pure passion.
