I remember the guy from England who ate at Nathan’s in I think it was 2005. He was a nice guy, and if i remember he was somewhat of a celebrity in the U.K. I think he was a former Rugby player. But, for the life of me I can’t remember his name. Does anyone remember? He wasn’t a great eater, let’s just say he was a better drinker. It seems he was there just to soak up the city and the event. But, a really nice guy.

Going World Cup with Nathan’s would be a very interesting concept. Two male eaters and two female eaters from every continent. Last year’s winner, and a top qualifier winner (for example this year, Joey/Pat and Sonya/Juliet representing North America and the U.S.). It would be disappointing for those eaters who didn’t make the top number in qualifiers in the U.S. or anywhere else, but it sure would put more pressure and attention on the qualifiers, and the event as whole from a world interest perspective. I know it’s a Fourth of July event, but that’s okay. It’s proper and a tradition for anyone throughout the world to eat hotdogs on the our nation’s birthday. Hey, if other nations want to come together and celebrate with us what could be better. I know we’ve done it on a piece meal basis, last year China, for example, but qualifier events in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, wouldn’t that be a gas! It sure would spice up the event with a little friendly international pride. Looking for something new they separated out the girls this year, a more international separate male and female competitions, who knows? There’s clearly international interest in CE. Why not make Nathan’s the Gastrolympic Games? Instead of World Cup — World Plate.

I remember signing up for a London qualifier in 2008 i think. It never took place, but it was on schedule. Never knew what happened.

Juliet and Sonya would represent their home countries of China and Korea. America has no real female eaters.
Don't deserve to be there... said

Gastrolympic Games, so we have a bunch of competitors from all over the world that don’t deserve to be at the finals – again! – based on the numbers that the Chinese nationals and alot of the women put up to get there. Yes, it is boring watching Joey and Sonya win yet again, but it would be even more annoying watching 15 people at the final table getting completely trounced – numbers quadrupled – by Joey. Especially after they ate 10 HDBs to make it to the finals.
Thank you, no!

It seems that almost every year someone is brought in one way or another to add what is thought of as some spice. In the early days, before Kobayashi, the numbers were not so high and no one expected these eaters to win or come close. It was never ever easy to get into Nathans, but there also were not as many people with skills and fighting for slots and deserving to be there.
Nathans is an American company, the almightily hotdog made famous by a German immigrant. Sonya, an immigrant from Korea, is now a proud American citizen. The table of eaters already shows what is typically American. Lets do the faces and names. Blacks, Hispanics, Whites from many many backgrounds, you can easily fill in the blanks here. Why not look for some American whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower instead of thinking global……..I really hope no one from MLE reads here, would hate to give them a really dumb idea but then all is about getting attention and changing things up.
In sum, last year was a great idea and let’s face it, some women eaters proved to be excellent. Give the women a chance, there may be more besides Sonya and Juliet. But do not look globally.

I’ve always felt that there may be scores of Joeys and Sonyas out there, but until all the worldly shrubbs get fully beaten, so to speak, we may never know for sure.
Being a stat-oriented person. given the current US population at over 312,000,000, of which approximately 230,000,000 are age 18 and over, the aforementioned contention just seems to make sense to me.
Having said that, looking at those numbers, it is truly mind-boggling just how talented the most elite competitive eaters are, especially considering how many more “pros” there are in more recognized sports.

Speed eating is a crazy thing – and yes, I have had my share of comps all over the world! The Nathans event is incredible now, the clock is down to 10 minutes and still you need to down 60+ hot dogs and buns to get into the running – amazing considering when I was there in 2005, Joey placed third with 30+ which was in 12 minutes!
I am semi retired now and only ever managed to hit events by invite in the UK, namely because nothing really exists. 26 minutes to eat the Kidz breakfast – bring it on I say 🙂
