Russian dies after victory in pancake contest

At a celebration of Maslenitsa or Pancake week ‘the fastest pancake eater contest’ ended in tragedy in the Kaliningrad Region, when the winner of the competition died as he prepared to accept his award.

Boris Isaev, 46, a resident of the city of Chernyakhovsk, climbed onstage to take the prize, but suddenly fell to his knees choking. Foam came out of his mouth and a few moments after he fell breathless.

This is the fifth death in an Eastern hemisphere eating contest since the start of 2008.

    It seems a common theme with these stories is that they choke well after the contest is over. So it seems there is more risk of choking if the food comes up, rather than when it is going down (when one has more control over what is happening). Or maybe these people just don’t clear their throats with liquid after and just stand around with food stuck in there for a long time without realizing it. Though one would think a competent EMT could take care of a simple case of choking and I have a feeling these places didn’t have one on site, but rather emergency folks showed up when it was already too late. . .but either way, it is a very sad thing when something that is supposed to be harmless fun ends like this. . .

    It is very, very unfortunate. Given enough contests tragic events like this are bound to occur occasionally. Let’s just keep hoping and praying that it never happens in our own back yard, so to speak.
