SI’s Peter King visits the urologist(s)

(via KissingSuzyKolber) The most recent Monday Morning QB column on the Sports Illustrated web site contains Peter King’s annual criticism of Nathan’s hot dog eating contest:

Whoever at ESPN thought of televising the Fourth of July contest from Coney Island and giving it some form of sporting glory ought to not only be fired but also sent to a class for education on world hunger. Here’s a stat for you, according to world hunger organization Bread For The World: One in seven people on earth suffer from severe hunger daily. That’s 963 MILLION people. The ratings suggest we are all guilty of promoting this grotesque custom. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves for giving ESPN reason for showing this.

The column contains a diary of King’s summer vacation. His July 20 entry:

Trip to the urologist. Regular checkup. Two docs. First doc examines me, and I should say he examines me thoroughly. He leaves and the other doc comes in. Very nice fellow, just like the first one. He puts on the rubber glove. Whoa! Whoa! This, uh, already happened! Second urologist wants to check out the situation for himself. Examines me a little more thoroughly. Other than the self-inflicted left-hand bite mark, all’s right with the world. Gosh, I love vacation.

Probably more than 1/7 of the world’s population lacks access to a single medical specialist, let alone a team of them.

    Lol @ OJ.

What people like Mr. King don’t realize when they criticize competitive eating and compare it against hunger is that the reason the problem exists is political. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m sure that the US probably donates the largest amount of food to outside people. Most of these countries starve because of their corrupt, Totalitarian societies…

While I don’t agree with Peter — I think he’s a jerk, matter of factly —- if they’d stop the dunking they’d waste far less food.

Most of the world doesn’t have access to an Ice Skating rink, or frozen pond….maybe we should eliminate Ice Hockey. Also, all the world’s restaurants waste food every day….they all need to be closed. He needs a twinkie, a cup of coffe, and a nap – and a good colon cleansing. Oh yeah, and he needs to shut up

Every year I read this and every year I get confused. Prior to this grotesque display of gluttony, was Nathan’s shipping the 600 or so hot dogs that are consumed out to the Tri-Delta region of Nigeria or something to save children or something? Logistics of feeding those people is much greater of an issue than supply, so maybe he should ride FedEx’s ass or something.

Peter King needs to cut out a few meals too. Anyone see his multiple chins.

Think about all the rubber and fossil fuels the sport of auto racing uses and it’s contribution to global warming!!! Man, we’d better put an end to NASCAR!

In all seriousness, the Shea’s need to do a better job of promoting the donations the IFOCE gives to America’s Second Harvest and other hunger fighting groups. That’s assuming they still give to those charities. Although most critic’s complaints aren’t that the eaters are “wasting food” (which is a microscopic amount compared to the food wasted every day in the US), it’s the image CE portrays and perpetuates.

As a goodwill gesture, the IFOCE should host eating contests in Zimbabwe and other starving nations. They could pit Joey or Pat against an entire village of people and see who wins! Everyone is happy and fed!
