I am saddened by the death of this lady. Much too young to pass. This was a very unfortunate accident, especially with her sister at the same event.

That said, it is NOT a CE death. This is like saying those tens of thousands that die from smoking are CE deaths. Or those that die from drinking are CE deaths.

This is a tremendously sad event, but to me it is no different then a person getting hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk or some other freak accideent.

It is sad. It might have been a freak accident, in one way, but it could have EASILY been prevented. That’s what makes it especially tragic. In the first place, EMTs should have been on hand by default. In the second place, marshmallows are a very soft food that easily blocks the airway. That was a tragedy waiting to happen.

I’m confused about this, too. What exactly did she die from?

the whole post is crazy. Apparently the woman was talking AFTER the contest so it’s not really clear that she choked. It’s a pretty horrible thing anyway.

it’s the response of the readers that is truly scary. Some called for a world-wide ban on competitive eating (Which is like shutting down NASCAR because some local kids got hurt drag racing in their town), and as horrible as the death is, I wonder how these people feel about all the poor High School and College kids that die on the Football field every year. How about skiing? How about guns? Guns kill more people than Marshmellows, yet we cant outlaw guns. (I’m making a point, and not a political statement) It just seems really reactionary, and we need to be mindful that we have safe operating procedures in practice and competition, especially if we want to continue to grow the sport. We can never control what others do, but I think it’s important we stress safety when doing any sort of PR.

Several of the commentors invoked God and said that the girl deserved to die because Gluttony is a sin. I can be pretty callous, but this simple dehumanization of a young girl in the name of God just blows me away.
